Petition to Free the Fields

Middleend - 8-6-2007 at 06:40 AM

:( Are you fed up with driving past that perfectly flat field with only one cow in it?

:( Are you narked that the farmer who own’s that field can’t let you use without damaging his European subsidies?

:( Sick at being treated as a second class, sporting citizen?

:( So you’re stuck driving half way across the country to avoid beaches with ban’s or ducking in and out of goal posts?

The main problem is the following, below is an extract from a letter that I received from the Rural Payments Agency.

“Following guidance received from DEFRA, Traction Kiting and a ‘safe fly zone’ is considered in the same category a Motor Sports….”

Basically this means that we fall in the Category B list of Activities, which permits us to use the land but for no more that 28 days per year and outside of the Single Payment Scheme’s 10 month rule.

I have started a petition to have kite sports listed in the Category A list, or Activities that can be carried out without restriction on the Land. Alongside Hang-Gliding and Paragliding. This will enable us to start reasonable dialogues with Farmers to use and maintain their land so that we can enjoy a greater proportion of our windy island!!

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/safeflyzones/

Please support the campaign, the more signatures we get the more likely we are to succeed. Even if you live by a beach without a ban or only fly on water or snow, come out in solidarity for the rest of us land locked grass lubbers and sign up all the same.

The other condition is that the Farmer should not accept payment for the use of the land. This is the subject of another petition and angle of attack I shall be pursuing. If we don’t ask we won’t get!!

If someone has already tried, my sincere thanks for trying and I would gratefully accept any advice from your experience.

Thanks in advance for your help and support, and if there are any more questions drop me a pm or post a question. And yes I probably do have too much time on my hands!!!

Thanks for your support, in advance.....

Good for you!

Congratulations on your grass-roots effort, Middleend!

I have been keeping up with access and land use issues here in the U.S., and find that many of the most threatening changes proposed by our government are met with abject apathy on the part of too many of our sport's participants. We are about to lose HUGE resources in the California desert, and I've not heard of a protest, a petition, or even a comment on the issues, nor does our "buggy group" here in the U.S., apparently, see any need for serious organization efforts.

What you're doing makes perfect sense to me, and if I were a British buggy pilot I'd be carrying copies of your petition with me, everywhere. I only wish I could offer my signature, but I'm sure a non-resident would not help your cause, much.

But good for you, anyway... apathy has already taken so much from the American people in the last few years; it seems that until we've lost it all, and must fight a war (dump tea in Boston Harbor?) to get it back, no one will pay much attention.

Mad King George ignored we Colonists at his peril; it seems the present "Mad King George" (the one in our White House), is feeling pretty free to ignore us without consequence. Learning and retention are not strong American traits, I'm afraid.

One day, we'll have to attach large, internal combustion engines to our kite buggies, just to be allowed to use our public lands. Makes perfect sense, no?

Thanks for the thoughts Dooley.

Fortunately apathy is something we are short of here. I guess its because we don't have that much space. And what space there is in under strain from the demand for its use. So far there are more than 240 sigs and we've only been going for a week!!:smilegrin:

Not sure what to say about your George issues, only we seem to have suffered from deaf ear syndrome but if you get enough people to stand up someone will listen eventually...:wink2:........definately don't take it out on your buggy tho....what's it ever done....

Good luck with your efforts......
