2 Wheel Skates...short wheel base ???

windyb - 10-5-2019 at 01:52 PM

Very surprised to learn about custom DoomWheels. I have seen many different builds but all seem to be suited to long runs....step turns.
I'm using KiteWings which are super maneuverable...turn on a dime. So I want wheels that work well with my Wing.
I have a pair of PowerSlide SUV skates but the wheels are not good for grass. I don't need 10"/12" wheels ....2" x 8" will be fine for my purposes.

I want to be able to turn without Step Turning. DoomWheels I've seen will not do that.

Has anyone experimented with 2x8 under foot vs long wheel base??

I've used inline hockey skates with the Kitewing, pretty good fun but concrete only and speed wobbles.

If you're DIYing, play with the wheel base. I think if you have them directly underfoot you'll be very tall and short, maybe too wobbly...

Will you be using them on grass only? Mowed grass? long grass...?

Having a 'shoe based vehicle' and starting with smooth asphalt, you can have a short wheel base and small hard wheels. As the terrain becomes increasingly difficult(hardpack dirt, hardpack beach sand, grass..) and as the need for bigger diameter and wider wheels comes into play, there is a certain point that makes any effort to simply turn difficult and thus easier by step turning.

Also,
Designing a short wheel base as wheels become too big becomes difficult. Powerslide does have models with the short wheel base and 150mm(dia.) .

If you Have the Poweslide SUV with 125 mm wheels.....It'd too small for hard pack beach sand, never mind the more difficult grass terrain .

There are a few of us on PKF who own Rollerblade Coyotes- with
150mm wheel and a slightly wider width also which are suitable for hard packed sand and allow regular turning, but I've never tried mine on grass, but suspect it would be lacking and still require step turning.

check out 5th post down and picture on this thread for 200mm wheels:

This may be the limit of short wheelbase and pre-step-turning-and... good on grass....or not??:puzzled:

2 Wheel Wonder

I have the PowerSlide and yes, only good on Pavement. I would like to ride on our city parks on grass with 2"x 8" wheels so I'm going to have a U channel made out of aluminum that will attach to my Powerslide boots.....make the channel long enough to allow me to experiment with various wheel base lengths.

2... 8"wheels with an inch spacing is 1/2" longer than my current PowerSlide 3 wheel set up at 16.5"

I have a DirtSurfer with 20" wheels but am shying away from having my feet locked in :D

After starting on tarmac with regular rollerblades I got turned on to Coyotes. I bought them and never really wanted for more? If I had continued to push for 50mph I would have gone to doomwheels but My bones are too old. I have always considered them leg breakers.

My Coyotes run very well in our park even when the grass gets pretty long? The BIG problem is the sand traps hidden in the grass. They stop dead on soft sand!

That 2 wheel setup Windstruck made that Skintwashington linked to looks like the best option for going big wheel and still being able to carve turns.

Wish I could say differently, but those German wheels of doom with the knobby pneumatic 200x50mm wheels did NOT carve. Needed to step turn them. That said, I never found that step turning was hard or a hindrance. These were the only set up that seemed to work for me with plush thick grass and as could be seen in that linked to thread I tried a lot of setups.

They were called Nordic Scouts: http://www.powerkiteforum.com/viewthread.php?tid=31825#pid30...
