JIBE 2017 on the way [edit 3/14]

acampbell - 11-2-2017 at 10:45 AM

Hey Gang

I am finalizing the event permit applications for JIBE 2017. All looks good for the TENTH JIBE!

This just in: JI Authority officially signs off on JIBE 2017 (after now requiring a Letter Of Permit from the GA Dept. of Natural Resources

JIBE Website timelines are updated and current for 2017. Just some of my map graphics have to be updated.

Remember the dates: Monday May 8th through Friday May12th. Times this year are listed as 11: am to 6:pm daily as tides are earlier this year but we know that this times are largely academic and are for insurance and permit purposes. Outside of these times we are on our own for liability issues.

Event is listed on the NAPKA Website

Remember, to register for JIBE, it's easy...
  1. Join or renew membership with NAPKA ($30)
  2. Register for the event on NAPKA web site (free for members)
  3. Fill out a Waiver and send it to me or bring with.

T-shirts and other collateral souvenirs are not included with registration. Davis Cheeks will again join us to develop and offer JIBE-wear independently. He has always done a great job with high quality and reasonable prices. Stickers are cool, too. This is the TENTH annual JIBE, so we can't wait to see what Davis come up with.

Other news about the event and Island this year...

Latitude 31 and the Rah Bar (restaurants on the waterway pier) are gone, victims of Hurricane Matthew. they will be replaced by a new venture by the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, but likely not in time for JIBE this year.

Restaurant 685 (formally Sea Jays) located in the marina near the waterway bridge, is gone, victims of themselves. Good news is that Zachry's Seafood and Steak is opening there by the end of March under the name "Zachry's River House". Zachry's was originally on the island but relocated to the mainland near exit 29 when the old shopping center was torn down. They are one of our favorite local restaurants and I'm sure they will do well at this great venue on Jekyll.

By the time of JIBE, there will be another new hotel, just south of the Westin and retail village. It is operated by the Jekyll Island Club Hotel.

There is a new Restaurant at the Holiday Inn Resort. Joan and I had dinner there the other night and it was just OK. Prolly better for lunch. The poolside cafe there ("The Anchor") is still good for breakfast, lunch & dinner with great casual island ambiance and dog-friendly.

Like last year, there will be no overnight Kite-Fort, so nightly breakdowns and taking gear will be required. This turned out to be not a problems last year, as it was a great way to hang out.

Alcohol is still OK on the beach, just NO GLASS. and watch for dehydration. We will have free cold water all week as usual.

NEW SHOPPING VENUES IN BRUNSWICK...
Sam's Club, Academy Sports (also Hobby Lobby and Home Goods), all located in new center off Rt. 25 Spur/ Golden Isles Pkwy, just south of I-95 Exit 38

Need anything else? Let me know. I will add more as it comes up as well. Looking Forward!

Fair Winds
Angus

Two words come to mind: "Wooo" and "Hooo"... exclamation point implied.

Thanks for all the hard work to get us all set up Angus!

Yes, of course; thank you Morrie. Edit made. Good deal.

Well Jibees, this year Fiona and won't be able to make it down so I'll be looking for updates every day and night to see what is going on this year. Sad to miss such a great get together with everyone, we really look forward to spending the time with everyone and bugging etc - that week in May just won't be the same. good to see the update on Jekyll and the posts already on people planning to go. We will be back, hopefully next year...with a new car for the trip down :-)

3shot - 12-2-2017 at 02:58 PM

Mark, we will raise some tall brews for you and Fiona at the WePub. Sure gonna miss you guys, and the porch light tall tales..

soliver - 12-2-2017 at 05:21 PM

Oh no!... what a bummer we won't see you guys this year!

You guys will be missed!

Demoknight - 13-2-2017 at 09:34 AM

No Mark you can't break your streak of perfect attendance!

acampbell - 13-2-2017 at 11:32 AM

Bummer indeed; well miss you for sure. So will J & J Tire. Pass our best along to Fiona.

BeamerBob - 13-2-2017 at 11:40 AM

Ok Mark. My stars are aligning to make it to JIBE 2018. Let's make it a reunion.

So - I'm taking bets.

My orthopedic surgeon thinks I won't be healed up in time for JIBE2017.

I disagree.

Distal bicep tendon rupture repair surgery.

A kitten could kick my ass now - if he came at my right side.

Out of the brace 2/28, start lifting little things 4/1.

That's plenty of time, right? I mean, worst case, someone launches for me and I strop in, right?

What's the worst that could happen?

jimbocz - 15-2-2017 at 06:58 AM

I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm coming as well. I'm sorting out my plane tickets and trying to find a buggy small enough to carry on the plane. For now it looks like I'll be flying Turkish Airlines through Istanbul and possibly borrowing a Parastorm buggy from Red Sky.

Even though I've posted intermittently on this forum for a few years, I've never met any of you guys and I'm looking forward to it. I grew up in North Carolina and have fond memories of time spent on the East Coast beaches. Every time I come home I've been dying to get out a buggy and now I'll have my chance.

See Y'all soon!

soliver - 15-2-2017 at 10:22 PM

What'd you do to yourself Jim?!?!?!?

Are you the crab buggy guy? I think we may have talked a while back about a trip to Morocco . How did you end up in the States?

jimbocz - 16-2-2017 at 02:12 AM

I was wondering about a few things:

Is anyone else going to be at the campsite? Is it possible to walk from the buggy site to the campsite or will I have to break my buggy down every time?

acampbell - 16-2-2017 at 04:08 AM

Awesome, jimbocz. We look forward to welcoming you to the Golden Isles region and the JIBE family. If we can be of any help, let us know.

Jimbocz
My web page had not refreshed since your previous post so I just saw your questions.

There will likely be other JIBE attendees at the campsite, as it is really popular. JIBE folks are usually evenly split between local hotels, vacation house rentals and the campsite. The campsite is on the north end of the island about 2 1/2 miles or 4 km from the JIBE staging area, so a walk may not be convenient. Most people break down their buggies in some fashion, but the max speed on the road is about 35mph with as much bicycle and golf cart traffic as there are cars, so you can do it hillbilly style with the buggy thrown on top or hanging out the back, whatever. The island is pretty laid back.

Looking forward to seeing you.

That all sounds good, I'm sure I'll settle into hillbilly style.

I'm going to get my plane tickets tonight and then contact the campground.

Thanks!

Not me.... and I was asking JimSSI how he hurt himself,... I realize that was confusing, my bad!

JimSSI,... What happened to you buddy?

JimSSI - 20-2-2017 at 07:26 PM

Spencer -

I was strapping down the kayaks, standing on the truck rail, slipped off, got my arm caught, pop.

Pain was intense for a minute or two - you know that kneed in the nads feeling?? - and then we went kayak fishing for 5 hours.

Went to my physical therapist "Not torn" - and ten days later, no better, my ortho guy.

"Torn, fix now." (Orthopedic surgeons are men of few words.)

soliver - 21-2-2017 at 06:21 AM

Bummer!... I hate when that kind of stuff happens, but glad to know you're on the mend.

3shot - 21-2-2017 at 07:22 PM

Get well soon Jim!
JIBE before last I broke my middle finger one week before the trip. Was all I could do to fly...:(

So were you in the middle of a New York City crosswalk or something?

Randy - 22-2-2017 at 08:46 AM

I had to think a while before I got that one.;)

pokitetrash - 23-2-2017 at 12:31 PM

Time to unstick the wheel bearings!

See you guys soon! I need to return the sand I left packed in my kites from last year... yup, it's been a year since I've buggied or even shook a kite out. I know - that's a horrible attitiude. I might need a refresher lesson. Or a beer. Yea. A beer and a cookie and I think it'll all come back to me. :D

Demoknight - 24-2-2017 at 12:12 PM

Angus you still need to update the map on the site. It shows the rideable beach stopping at Driftwood Beach. Adventurous sailors can make it up and around the northern tip of the island to the pier and back with the right wind direction.

Yeah I could swear that I had a version of the map with that north end labeled for you and Markite. Those maps are in Corel Draw files and when I can find my Corel Draw 12 install files to fix my hosed installation, I'll update for sure! Also updating recent construction and facilities changes.

3shot - 24-2-2017 at 10:20 PM

We are easily entertained. Good beer and good wind!
Can't wait to see everyone again!

Demoknight - 28-2-2017 at 09:08 AM

I am bringing my little electric truck again this year, but I have fitted it with an FPV system now so I can drive it using a live camera and should be able to get much better chase videos of some of you guys buggying along. 3Shot's avatar was actually filmed from the truck. It gets a great perspective from nice and low that looks great and gives a good sense of speed.

Definitely good stuff Errol! You had some amazing footage. So you can pilot the RC with a VR headset now?

Errol's new system is trick. He's got the VR headset that alternately projects the real world view and the car's view. Along with that he got the mind-control module that allows him to steer the car just by thinking about where it should go. This allows him to buggy while he drives the RC car.

What could possibly go wrong???

acampbell - 1-3-2017 at 07:52 AM

Way cool. Can my puppy ride in the truck?

SSI_Stefan - 1-3-2017 at 09:00 AM

Excited to take AP exams in the morning then head straight to Jekyll to fly!

Yep. It is basically a drone on wheels. The problem last year was that I could follow you guys a bit, but when you get farther away, depth perception is a lot harder and I don't want to get too close or risk collision or getting the very expensive truck run over. Now I can see what the truck sees, and should be able to frame shots better for the actual camera that I record with on top. I took the FPV setup to the family beach trip last year, and it is so much fun driving around in the truck. The video signal actually reaches a lot farther than the control signal, so I can easily see where I am driving right up until I lose control of the truck and it goes into failsafe mode and stops.

Cheeks - 2-3-2017 at 05:47 PM

Wow, JIBE 10 ! This will be #5 for me. Hopefully all my surgeries will be healed up and I'll be like a new man when I get there. Planning to leave Friday night, a 3 1/2 hour drive, camp free at the "Flying J" and be on the beach Sat. morning waiting for low tide.

I've been on the drawing board working up an "JIBE 10" anniversary design. Got to glorify ten great years that Angus has put on this event for us and what it means to our sport.

I have a new color, "heather granite" cool blend shirt in mind.
But I want to know what you all think about a high viz colors. Orange, yellow green,
florescent green and hot pink?

What say you all? I could take special orders if anyone wants one.

3shot - 2-3-2017 at 07:40 PM

That's sooo cool Errol!

Davis, I'm game for whatever the swag is.
1 ladies XL
2 ladies small
1 men's XXL

Hope you heal up Sood bud!

soliver - 2-3-2017 at 10:27 PM

Not a Fan of the high viz thing... I don't personally care for bright colors and I want to buy a shirt that I'll want to wear when I get home from JIBE

jimbocz - 3-3-2017 at 04:02 AM

I agree that high viz isn't high on my list of desires. What I do like is a really thick, high quality fabric, like a Beefy T.

Heather Granite sounds like a great color.

jimbocz - 3-3-2017 at 04:24 AM

By the way, what about mosquitos? Is May too early for them?

Will it be shorts and t shirt weather?

acampbell - 3-3-2017 at 07:00 AM

Never too early for mosquitoes, but worse are the sand gnats, aka "no-see-ums". Mosquitoes poke at you with sipping straws but gnats rip your flesh with tiny chain saws. Bugs are out now on warm days with low wind and are a possibility for JIBE. Any day with modest wind will keep them away on the beach but they can be a nuisance off beach with no wind. We can put a bug bomb on Errol's truck and he can fog the place.

Figure temps in the 80's F (about 30 C for y'all) so shorts and t-shirts are in, just watch the sun, which is reflected on the beach just like on snow. Bring sun-block in SPF 30. I will have cold water on the beach for all.

What is this "sun" you speak of? I've heard that such a thing exists outside of London.

Cheeks - 4-3-2017 at 04:39 PM

OK, I agree with the idea of a shirt you can wear other times and places.

Here in South (redneck) Carolina current fashion trends as seen at the local Wal Mart are Camo and High Viz that dominate what we might call "normal" apparel. I thought it was a fad at first but now several years later it's now part of the fashion culture for less sophisticated people and their kids.
We sell a lot of this in my store.

The heather granite is a new color for this year. It's a Guilden 50/50 "Ultra Cotton", a nice weight. Popular style washes well.

The other idea for the the 10th anniversary shirt is a good ole hippy "Tie Dye".
100% cotton, pre shrunk, color set so they don't bleed and are color fast.

Any comment here?

acampbell - 4-3-2017 at 08:13 PM

Good call on the shirt colors Davis. I liked the rustic muted tones of recent shirts. In fact I saw a complete stranger wearing last year's blue shirt in a local WalMart ( I swear I was just there on business). Not sure where he got it. But anyway...

We get a lot of folks with high viz shirts ( or looking for) because they work at the local seaport or other high traffic industrial areas. At Lowes we also had local sportsmen asking for camo gear and we would just say "yeah we have camo stuff but it works real good so we can never find it".

I like the idea of the Heather Granite.

frankiter - 4-3-2017 at 08:33 PM

Davis - whatever you're selling, I'm buying. Any previews of the artwork?

Frank, do you honestly believe that Angus was really at WalMart for business? Probably getting a copy of "The Jerry Cans" latest release. Great music to tap dance too.

I'm glad that you saw a copy of last years shirt in the local area. I did sell a few shirts to passer bys. They thought the sport was "neat" and wanted to support the cause by the purchase of a souvenir. A kite buggy and the words Jekyll Island with a date. Not your run of the mill island shirt but all the elements were there. Never know, he just might show up with a quiver and a ride to join us.

BTW.... "The Jerry Cans" album is off the chain!!! What planet are those people from?
Angus, love your taste in music!

Believe it or not my paycheck now says "WalMart" on it. No I don't work for WalMart but for the new Sams Club opening here this month. A whole different animal. Come see me in the electronics section near the front doors.

Wow, Iqaluit - that brings back memories. It was a hot sticky day early April 2002 when Jim Everding and I boarded a plane in Vegas to head home after Spring Break Buggy Blast. Flew home to Ontario to the warmest few days in early April ever. Unloaded the buggy gear and shook the dust out, loaded kites and skis and snowboards and a lot of warm clothes and headed to Ottawa to meet Brian Smith (Active People), Claude Gravel and few other friends. We were wearing shorts and t-shirts in an unheard of 26 Celsius to catch a plane up to Iqaluit. The plane was delayed because of a storm. We flew up and with windchill of -50 c it was the most extreme temperature change over a few days and the coldest I had ever felt - ice on our faces running from the plane to the terminal. But it was a fantastic adventure....but a whole other story - Jekyll Island is a hell of a lot warmer

photos - Claude and I setting up out on the ice pack. Me on the hill outside Iqaluit, the town and local transit

They always seem to enjoy having us there. This has become a tradition for me and my girlfriend, and now her family every year. I think I would still be going to Jekyll in May every year even if it weren't for JIBE at this point.
