2014 Dead Bird ideas

2014 Dead Bird

East Beach as usual... or since it is a day event only now, can we have it at San Luis Pass? Opposite end of the Island, but better opportunity to ride... Just my opinion and thought I'd throw it out there months in advance.

kitemaker4 - 1-8-2014 at 07:44 AM

I have not problem going to slp.

Ready to buggy...let us know where. Anyone talked to Rick and Sara?

BigMikesKites - 6-8-2014 at 06:07 AM

I like SLP better anyway. Much more room

Sier_Pinski - 6-8-2014 at 05:59 PM

The thing I'm worried about with SLP is that it can only really work if winds are blowing from the southeast or south. If winds are blowing from the northeast or north like the last two years, it may be a bit more difficult to kiteboard at SLP's shorelines compared to our usual east beach.

van - 11-8-2014 at 07:30 PM

I'm ok with both location

pyro22487 - 13-8-2014 at 07:28 PM

SLP or east beach maybe we have the event at SLP but if winds are blah then to east beach. I have the teardrop trailer ready and soon a portable wind turbine and power supply for phones gopros and computers.

rtz - 13-8-2014 at 08:47 PM

Where do you park at for SLP and what does the riding area look like there?

pyro22487 - 13-8-2014 at 09:12 PM

SLP is located about 20 miles down the beach from Galveston. If I remember correctly. It has an overpass that AJ use to buggy under with a NPW. From what I have been told. The parking is kinda a free for all from what I saw but it's right off the main road there.

pyro22487 - 13-8-2014 at 09:18 PM

Um question about camping is it aloud if not is there a camp ground close by.

Taper123 - 4-9-2014 at 06:40 PM

SLP has a wide flat area that can have a buggy area in any wind direction. For kite boarders, no matter the direction, they can hit the gulf, or go the short distance to the backside which is the bay. For Camping, Galveston has outlawed beach camping pretty much everywhere on the island. The other side of SLP is in a different county and it is legal. The beach there is just narrow and does not have the same buggy opportunities. For those who want to tent camp / rv , the state park has campsites and is closer to slp than it is to east beach, or they can cross the 1$ toll bridge and camp on the beach for free.

The hotels at Clute / Lake Jackson area are about the same distance as those in Galveston for the price conscious, or there is the condo complex at SLP for those who like luxury. Couple of smaller old hotels at surfside as well.

Or we can stick with East Beach.

Yes :)

Taper123 - 4-9-2014 at 06:51 PM

...ok, everyone bringing or cooking something to eat gets to vote on where we have it. How's that sound? Beach Cookers rock...

Taper123 - 10-9-2014 at 08:43 PM

I vote for SLP

Anyone else who cooks can add to the vote...

I'll bring the turkey fryers

I'll go to either location, but would prefer SLP. You cook or bring a dish...and your vote counts.

List it and your location preference. (East Beach or SLP)

It's a feast no matter what, but when everyone who attends wants to add... it's even better.

I am planning on being at DBBB again this year. Either beach is fine with me - just let me know which one!

BigMikesKites - 12-9-2014 at 01:58 AM

Always look forward to this event

Glad to see your post Rick. I am booked at the state park again for dead bird. Slp is closer to the state park for me so, it would be nice to play there.

If it comes down to a vote, I would pick SLP .. I don't like all the restrictions at East Beach. Last time I went there , you weren't allow to put up shades ( canopy type) anymore near the water.. only umbrellas. Canopy can only be erected near the cars. They are trying to make east beach look like the resort beach in florida. Pretty soon, they will run off us buggiers.

Yikes, don't let that happen! I hope to buggy in Texas at some point!

Taper123 - 19-9-2014 at 05:32 PM

I'm in favor of SLP for several reasons. Better beach, better access, and more area to ride in no matter the wind direction... but let's discuss the other factors that PKF members have brought up in the past.

The entire channel side of East Beach is now part of a wildlife refuge/bird sanctuary listed on Galveston and national websites. I know of one pkf member who was told to leave the area and had to walk his buggy/kite out.

Most people prefer SLP. It is an event for power kites and buggies... East Beach puts everyone in a spot that is an environmental hotspot for bird migration. For that reason alone, I wish everyone would agree to go to SLP. When the local chamber of commerce is posting "bird watching" instead of kite flying.. you know which side of the legal fence we stand on.

No one on the PKF has opposed SLP, and privately I've heard of some who want to keep East Beach out of tradition. Let's all throw the facts on the table and go from there. I'll go wherever everyone else does... but SLP is not much farther and offers a better chance for enjoyment no matter the type of kite a person is flying.

Do not want to split the group up... just stating what has been a underlying conversation for years.

van - 19-9-2014 at 05:43 PM

We've always gone to slp for the pre-event so why not make that our main event also. We usually go there for buggying these days anyways. We've been hassled by the rangers at east beach already so I now do prefer slp

Taper123 - 19-9-2014 at 05:48 PM

Van and I greatly contribute to the feast and the cooking efforts... everyone plays a part, so we are just two individuals... but we are also local. When even the locals are suggesting a move, hopefully people listen. We all want the same thing... a fantastic Thanksgiving Dinner and the chance to play with the wind.

Taper123 - 19-9-2014 at 06:47 PM

Everyone on the PKF has universally supported SLP or wherever the majority wants. Only dissenting votes have been in private/facebook messages.

East Beach was once a fantastic place to have an event. Times change. Last couple of years I have attended the beach conditions have been horrible. It's a day event now anyways since Galveston outlawed camping. So why not hold it near where people can camp, and only a few more miles for others to drive. SLP has always been a better buggy beach since I and many other locals started flying power kites.

My plea to move it is not personal, but an effort to continue the tradition. The writing is already on the wall for those who pay attention. Holding kite events in bird sanctuaries has never worked out well for kiters.

centex_buggier - 19-9-2014 at 07:10 PM

I'm in for SLP.
I'll bring a couple of turkeys.

Steve.

Taper123 - 19-9-2014 at 07:24 PM

I'll cook 'em :)

Centex_Buggier is a regular at the DBBB feast.

SLP will be the place to be.

Taper123 - 19-9-2014 at 08:12 PM

I started this thread and overwhelmingly people have said SLP. Anyone willing to support a East Beach profile? I know it is tradition, but please take local input into consideration.

treblehook - 20-9-2014 at 08:33 AM

I as well got run off from east beach . Was on a middle of the week day. No one on the beach. So if my vote counts, I would say SLP fo sure. Have not seen Mark or Jeremiah chime in. As the date gets closer, i would suggest that some of us locals do a recon mission . Yall know who you are . And yes Van that means you got to get a buggy together. Haha.

With two people reporting that they told that were they could not buggy on east beach I am wondering if single line kites will be allowed. It is a sad day to think that east beach is off limits to kites since we have been going there for years now. I do know that there has never been a problem going and flying any type of kite at slp. It woud be a major pain to have everything set up at east beach on turkey day and then being told no kites allowed. My thoughts are move the event to slp and have no worries for the event. Just my thoughts. Please post your thoughts and concerns so we can try and address them.

So if I cook three items on the beach I get at least three votes, right?
I vote SLP, SLP and uh... SLP. That should just about do it.

BTW for you peeps that like the comfort of a hotel, it takes almost exactly the same amount of time to get to SLP from the Super-8 in Galveston as it does to get to East Beast, about 20 min either way.

kitemaker4 - 22-9-2014 at 10:09 AM

There are some nice hotels in Freeport also.

I'll be there as well. SLP sounds fine to me.

tom irby - 12-10-2014 at 11:13 AM

I will be bringing the motor home hope the area is hard packed and I can drive to get to the site you want to set up the festivities.

Nfish - 13-10-2014 at 04:26 PM

I think its fine once you get in, but the trail from the road to the beach is a bit rough (uneven). I always feel like my buggy will fell off the rack behind my car every time I drove on that trail, but it never did. Also, there are some soft sand at the entrance that you need to speed through(at least in summer), but its pretty much hard packed after that.
