Actual Water Lessons?

Proletariat - 5-4-2014 at 08:32 PM

Hi guys,
I have wanted to take water lessons for a while now, and Iwonder if JIBE would be a decent place to do so (or even if they're offered).

I know a number of you kind hearted souls have offered to show me around, but I would hate to take up someone's riding day with informal lessons and stupid questions. Safety is a big deal to me, so I'd like to know everything there is to know about how to kite and not drown. Could you all point me in the right direction?

I'd need a board, probably wetsuit and I'm assuming a half days of lessons, but id use my own kites. Does anyone teach out at JIBE? Can I schedule something? How much does that sort of thing typically cost?

Thanks!

Dave, if no one ends up offering a lesson, there are schools on Tybee Island which is about an hour north of JI. If you didn't want to miss a day of JIBE you could come a few days early and catch a lesson up there. Just a thought.

Dave,
Angus has a guy that he recommends for water that is certified. Can't remember his name but I think there is a link at coastalwindsports.com

Your man of the hour for water instruction in the golden isles is PASA certified instructor Rob VanWie. Find info...

He is not part of Coastal Wind Sports put I put a page for him As a local courtesy. Nice guy with 7-8 yrs local experience. He is usually hanging out at Jibe when he can but call ahead to check his schedule. He will have water gear local.

Not to hijack your thread, but I'm flying over this year instead of driving so I probably will just bring a couple kites and a kiteboard this time. Not sure if anyone else but I guess I'll see you on the water:thumbup: Can't wait to try my new Fury Lite!

I still need to figure out the best way to get my board there as the airline will charge $100 each way, so it maybe cheaper to ship it to someone instead?

That address is very near I-95 exit 29 (1 mile) and about 15 minutes from the beach and JIBE. It's called Exit 29 Postal and More. Hours are M-F 9-6 and Sat 10-3p. If needed, John can stay late if you give him a heads up or let me know and I can pick-up and hold for you if I can get it in my Tucson.

Thanks Angus. I'll let you know when I'm ready to send the board; still trying to catch a session or two before JIBE. :D

I might want to give the water a shot while I am there. Water was never my goal with kiting, but since I know a ton of you guys are water kiters also, I wouldn't mind having a go. Depending on how the wind looks, I might cave and get some lessons on an instructor's equipment. My largest kite is my 12m Charger, which probably doesn't have enough ass to get me up on a board in anything less than 15mph of wind.

I'll have gear available and can get you thru launch, land, rescue, dragging, and board starts.......very shallow at low tide..........
