2014 JIBE announcements and what's different...

acampbell - 15-3-2014 at 10:37 AM

Hey Gang

The web site is updated for 2014 as is the downloadable JIBE_GUIDE.pdf document.

http://www.coastalwindsports.com/JIBE.html

What is different this year...

This year we will be a NAPKA event. There no JIBE Registration or fees unless you want a t-shirt on-site. You just have to be a NAPKA member and bring a helmet as well as you numbers (even thought this is a non-racing event). Simple! Not a member? go to http://www.napka.org/

New and existing NAPKA members should register for JIBE by going to "Upcoming Events" at the napka.org home page, then click JIBE 2014, then click "Register for Event". It's fast and easy, and lets me know that you're attending.

Finn's Restaurant is CLOSED and will re-open sometime as part of the College of Coastal Georgia Culinary Arts Program. I do not know yet if we will have any access to restrooms there during JIBE 2014. Restrooms at the park to the immediate south are of course still there.

If you had an annual pass for the island in the form of a bar-code sticker and you wish to renew it, you must pay an additional $10 to upgrade to a new radio frequency tag on the windshield. It will let you use any lane. Daily parking is still $6 and weekly rates are still available.

There is more new construction on the island in the form of a new Westin Hotel (opening in Dec.) and a new shopping center behind the convention center, but traffic patterns are not affected.

The "Goasis" travel plaza near exit 29 with the BP station is now a fully equipped "AT" Truck plaza with truck pumps, parking and expanded store. That's for you, Todd.

You're good to go!

3shot - 15-3-2014 at 10:17 PM

SWEET!!! Thank you Morrie!

Leave it to a NAPKA newb to mess up the attendance list for JIBE. I apologize. Can a mod bail me out? :embarrased:

Bladerunner - 15-3-2014 at 11:01 PM

WOW this is cool news !

Now for 1 simple fee you can attend almost all regular events in North America that require event insurance. 3 events for 1 fee for many lucky East Coaster ! More if you join us in Washington or Ivanpah !

NAPKA is finally accomplishing what I had always hoped it would become ! It really is a great solution to many of our access issues and I'm happy to see it continue to grow !

BIG prop's to Angus for hunting down an insurer for NAPKA years ago and Rich for growing the club in such a fine way !
:bigok:

If anyone has any problems getting their membership taken care of please contact myself or Morrie and we will be glad to help.

frankiter - 16-3-2014 at 08:11 AM

Wow, registering for JIBE could not have been easier.

But here's some NAPKA questions. My membership expires before JIBE, so how do I renew? Do I use the "Annually Recurring Payment" link on the website? Do I need to submit a new waiver form?

3shot - 16-3-2014 at 09:59 AM

OK. All set. Thanks everyone!

Login, go to "Membership Renewal" under Pilots Menu, choose "One Time Payment" or "Annually Recurring Payment" if you want it to happen each year without thinking about it.

Yes, you need a new waiver form each year and a new photo if you want to change the one on your membership card.

Hope that helps,
Morrie

Is it required that we join NAPKA to attend? I'm only curious, cuz I'm not sure if wifey is going to be ok with the membership fee... In other words... Does it cost any less to pay the registration to JIBE rather than joining NAPKA?

It's not that I don't want to join, in fact I do... I just have a hard time justifying kite related expenses lately and am not sure how this is going to go over.

Just asking... Sorry to be a bum :(

tridude - 16-3-2014 at 02:21 PM

Is a NAPKA membership required for water activities? No problem if it is just asking.........gracias!

NAPKA doesn't cover water activities, you're on your own.

tridude - 16-3-2014 at 02:31 PM

Didn't think so but had to ask........never on my own........if you make the event you'll see
:lol::lol::duh:

shehatesmyhobbies - 16-3-2014 at 03:24 PM

Soliver, JIBE used to be a registration event. You sign up to go, pay the fee and attend, now it is a NAPKA event, you join NAPKA instead of paying the JIBE registration fee. This allows Angus to get the insurance for the event through NAPKA instead of seeking it on his own.

I don't think there is much difference between what the old registration fee used to be and the NAPKA fee.

Hope this helps

shehatesmyhobbies - 16-3-2014 at 03:35 PM

One other thing, the requirements for an event and having to be a member of NAPKA are

If you intend on being the pilot of a buggy, land board, dirt surfer or Coyotes(Beach Blades)

If you are coming to just fly a kite, or spectate, it is not a requirement to be a member.

Just trying to cover some other FAQ

Bladerunner - 16-3-2014 at 04:16 PM

Now entry to JIBE is covered by your NAPKA membership but I think Angus is working something separate for the T-shirts. They of course are not part of the NAPKA membership and I am sure will be optional.

You might gain brownie points with the wife by getting the NAPKA membership and passing on the T-shirt to save money ? ;)

Having free admission to WBB may help her decide to go there !

acampbell - 16-3-2014 at 06:01 PM

Yeah JiBE was $20 last year and cost me. This year would have been $30 with higher insurance costs. So the $40 with NAKPA getting you in to all events, it seemed reasonable. But I know it does not benefit all that way, so it was a tough call. Over the years I have been gradually deconstructing the complexities of JIBE (ok its not the Super Bowl or anything) and this helps continue that track.

soliver - 16-3-2014 at 06:21 PM

It's all good, ... We talked it over and she's cool with it... On the way to the NAPKA site.

hiaguy - 16-3-2014 at 06:44 PM

If it helps in the conversation, once my wife understood that the NAPKA membership covered the "what if" liability insurance, she was completely good with it.

I still get grief for having my son out of school, but that's another conversation.

Both my kids are coming with us. As long as they maintain their good grades and perfect attendance.

Just so you are clear : NAPKA is EVENT insurance not personal injury insurance .

You are still responsible for your own injuries etc. . It is the land owners who are protected and satisfied by the insurance.

@bladerunner: Which is why I said "liability insurance".
As happy Canucks, the issue of personal/health insurance is another story completely - one that I can only gloat over when I consider the plight of many of my American friends. My wife worries about the someone or something that I might crash into … (and she's never seen me in a buggy:lol: )

@soliver: The deal in my home is: do the best that you can, and you can come to WBB. Fortunately, my kids get better marks in school than I ever did.

Now… back to JIBE...

SEA TURTLE CENTER TOUR

I have gotten confirmation from the Georgia Sea Turtle Center that our guided tour will be FRIDAY May 16th at 11 am. Saturday ill be busy with the Turtle Crawl Trathlon so that is cool. Better for us.

Web site and the JIBE Guide PDF have been updated.

Sign up with me. Cost is $10 per adult, $8 for kids 12 and under, $9 for seniors 65 and up. You can pay on site.

For those new to JIBE and the area, the Sea Turtle Center is not just a museum but is an active working hospital and treatment center (and you get to watch).

Duration is 45 min - 1 hour. Meet out in front of the center. Our own guide will lead us through the center, discuss the latest science and explain new displays. We will then go out back to the hospital and treatment tanks where we will get a detailed run-down on each patient's history, treatment, prognosis and will this include Q & A.

If you have seen the center before, you may sill find this worthwhile because the science and new patient stories always change. they also do a good job at the Center of updating the displays and exhibits.

Remember too that our group's attendance shows the support of the kiting community of the Island, the Turtle Center and the environment. This does not go un-noticed by the Jekyll Island Authority.

Because the tour is at what is still high tide, it does not impact kite buggy time.

soliver - 22-3-2014 at 08:16 PM

^^^ turtle tour is worth it gang,... Kids love it for sure

3shot - 23-3-2014 at 06:05 AM

Angus. Me, Wifey, and two young daughters will be going to the tour.

waltweb - 31-3-2014 at 03:11 AM

So can I just confirm, that as a visiting overseas participant, who wishes to beg steal or borrow a buggy, I need to get NAPKA membership to be covered?:)

acampbell - 31-3-2014 at 01:59 PM

Yes, that is the case for full coverage. $40 US can be done online at napka.org or on on-site

waltweb - 9-4-2014 at 10:49 AM

Well after a few tweeks, thanks Morrie, I,ve now joined NAPKA, paid, and registered. The system was never designed for non- north american,s! But Morrie fixed it, so all systems go!
Whoooho!

shehatesmyhobbies - 9-4-2014 at 11:59 AM

Glad to have you on board Walt! Enjoy the JIBE event, maybe next year we will see you at WBB!
