I have a Phantom1 that need refurbishing. Keeping the kite
- 2 inch rip near the lower center cell
- Where\how would you fix this
- No more bar
- I was going to use an Ozone Instinct bar\lines?
- Because it is what I have available
- Most of my kites are ozone, and I am trying to normalize
- Thinking of replacing the 4 lines on the kite? Is it a pain, will I screw around with Karma?

A 2 inch rip sounds bad, I suggest you turn this into a couple awesome jackets
No, a 2 inch rip really isn't too bad, is it away from the seam on the outer skin only (away from the ribs)? The simplest fix is a piece of ripstop
repair tape covering it and if it's the centre cell then you can reach inside and have a piece of tape on outside and inside. Try and get material as
flat as possible and torn edges lined up as best as possible before taping and round the corners of the piece of tape.
You can use another bar as long as you have a reasonable amount of throw and a safety set up so that you can flag the kite to a single front line.
When you say replacing the 4 lines you mean the leaders on the kite from the front and short pigtails on the back (this is an original phantom not the
P2 correct?)
Yes you can replace these if worn. They are just looped through the webbing tabs - easy to replace.

If the Bar and Lines has a Y shape, then it probably won't work. I tried it on some LEI bar and lines back in the day and it causes the tips to be too
close together.
By Y shape, I refer to the middle line being "Single" for about 5m before it branches out to two lines. Thatwill not work. The two front lines should
come down to the bar leaders separately.

I think the Ozone bar will work fine, the split is easily low enough.

I am wondering if I can send it to someone who can\will fix it up nicely, replace the pigtails, and fix the rip.

John at powerzone kites repairs kites. He is in Bellingham Washington. For East Coast check Fix my Kite.
We have a local sail repair shop in Vancouver ( North sails ) that do great work on all the local kites. If you have a sail shop in town try them.

It's a very easy fix and doesn't sound like the rip is in a critical place for repair. There are places you can ship it and I would even do it for you
but shipping the kite will cost more than the actual repair.
Can you post a photo of the damage to have a better assessment.
For your lines are you seeing a lot of wear on them? The leaders on the kite don't normally get any wear unless a flying line is cutting through.
There weren't pull lies so they should be good.
If you needed rear pigtails they are simple to make as well as your front leader.
If you feel you need to ship it then as Ken said John would be a good choice but I think you could do all yourself and save a lot of time and cost.

Basically, for the rip I will put rip stop tape until I am nearer to a shop, likewise for the pig tails. For the bar are the new PL bars to much of a Y? Should I get the original
bar? Open to all suggestions

I wanted to go to PSI this winter, another reason.:D

The Navigator bars will work but an 04 through 07 bar will work just as well. Especially if you put a long throw on it to take advatage of the
depower range that kite has to offer.
The advantage to the Navigator is that the safety runs through a 4.5 line throug the chickenloop to the leash so spinning the bar isn't sloppy like
the earlier models.
The Y line will tighten the span up a little but not enough to be a problem. It's a bit of a double edged sword as it does a good job keeping the
kite from flaring in and luffing in rotors etc. but if the kite inverts it's a PITA to get it right side out.
If you have smooth winds it's not an issue.:D

One thing not mentioned is that the newest model Navigator is not a Y line. It has 4 full length lines and then the half line that goes through the
bar for the safety. It really is nice that your lines and leash don't get wound up if you loop the kite and spin the bar to unwind the lines. If you
notice the lines that go through the bar are twisting up, you can undo that with the swivel on top of the chicken loop even while riding.

So the new PL Navigator TS Bar will work? I don't want to lose anything :D
BeamerBob - 16-11-2013 at 06:15 PM
The new TS bar is much like what your kite originally came with except it has a bit more throw, adding to it's depower range.
ilivni - 16-11-2013 at 07:32 PM
I guess I am in the market for a bar
Feyd - 18-11-2013 at 10:55 AM
And the linesets are different. The flag out design on the current TS Navi bar is not the same as Peter Lynn bars up to '07.
If you don't care much about being able to spin the bar and you have another PL bar (any 4 line will work with minor adjustment) you can lengthen the
bar's throw range by replacing the center line leaders. If using the strap style trim, you may have difficulty reaching it at the far end of the
throw especially in a waist harness. I prefer clam cleats for this reason and it eliminates buckle twists under heavy trimming in and out.

+1 for Clam Cleats. I use the CL826-11AN on 4mm Amsteel.
