Possible Phantom II quiver

Cheddarhead - 27-6-2013 at 09:25 AM

Looking at picking up a two kite Phantom II quiver this fall before the ski season. Any insite from the Phantom experienced people what a good two kite combo would be? I weigh 220lbs without gear and winter winds average 10-20mph around here with some scattered days above that for wind speeds. A 18/12 combo came to mind immediately, but I know that a 15m is probably the most versatile in the group. If funds were unlimited I would just buy them all, but two is the most I could afford this year. Am I on the right track? Thanks.

I was going to pose the same dilemma. I love my 12 and it would be getting strong in 20 mph but in snow you'd still be golden with the 15. I say go big and get the 15 and 18. Add the 12 in next year if you find yourself missing sessions in winds where you can't handle the 15.

I am with Bob- do the 15 and 18 but do charger 2 instead of phanny 2. Not as fast as the phanny but a lot more grunt for the varying snow conditions- if its deep powder need more grunt which the charger has but if its slick ice you can keep the charger a little higher.

PS i am baised in that i did not really like the phanny 2s but love the charger 2s and am riding mtn board

I'm 210 and on light days 6-15MPH - I use my 24M on double line-set (50-55M) my personal Fav right now.
For 15-20MPH I'd say 12 or 15M.

I'd love to try a CH2 sometime to see the difference... ;)

The new charger makes me pause for a thought also. I don't board on land or water, only ski and buggy so I figured Phantom would be the way to go in that regards. Going fast is also of importance, another reason I'm leaning toward the Phantom. Snow rarely gets deep here on the lakes due to wind and melt cycles, but occasionally piles up toward late winter if we have a good year. I would love to sample both the charger and Phantom to see what flavor I would prefer but it's almost impossible to do without a supply of kites in front of me.

I'll agree partly with Flyguy. If you will regularly be in snow, then the Charger II might be the right tool for you. If you are going to be on smooth ice with little drag lots of times, then the Phantom II would be choice.

Big open space with lots of running room and need for speed, i think the phanny would be a little better. I just prefer the grunt and oomph of the charger because most of my flying is in small fields or short runs

P2-15m on 20m lineset with 2 sets of 10m extensions (for 30 and 40m) will cover your wind range

When I saw your post, my first response would easily be Charger 2. Now keep in mind that when most people are saying the charger 2 is slower than the phantom 2 there is more to it. I've got both kites and I do like speed and having gone through last winter using the P2s as well as charger 2 I would say any speed difference isn't,t that much and so far I have not found the charger 2s lacking at all in speed.
The biggest thing that I've seen over and over for years is people wanting the fastest kites and buggies possible but when it comes to the conditions to go for top speeds the vast majority only go to their comfort level and don't push it to the max top end when you start to see the differences. I think the charger 2s would put you over 60 mph both kite skiing and probably with the the small sizes in a buggy so it depends how you like to push yourself and just what you are thinking when you talk speed.
There are more reasons why I'm favouring the ch2s over p2s - the biggest being the lack of any grunt power when the p2s get to the lower side of their wind range. Being inland winds are always gusty and varying and there were quite a few times when I found myself underpowered with the power just dropping off dramatically as wind dropped kite skiing and buggying with the p2s. The charger2s have been fast for me in the buggy as well as kite skiing so personally I would go Charger 2 and if you like speed then possibly a 15 / 10 combo. The 18s do have a bit more grunt than a 15 in light wind but for kite skiing if there is enough wind to inflate and fly the kite the 15 produces the nice balance of speed and power but if you we doing more snowboarding than skiing I would go for the 18/12. In the buggy the 15 is a nicer handling size and I would just go for a larger fixed bridle to cover you until you have a
Enough to run the 15

So many good thoughts on this:o If a Charger II will give me versatility, grunt AND speed, that sounds like more the ticket I'm looking for. I flew different arcs a few years back and really loved them. My favorite being the Venom II, second the synergy and lastly the scorpion. Scorpion was a pain in my behind because the thing wouldn't hold air more than a basketball net would, so it was a short lived love affair. Venom had more grunt than my synergy but lacked the quickness. Perhaps the new charger could fulfill most of those attributes I'm looking for. Perhaps my best start would be a 15 meter charger with a couple different line lengths to mix things up and go from there. I don't think that would be a bad start.

Cheddar. I love my venoms and I would say the c2 is a refined venom ii with synergy turning really love the 15. Flew marks 18 and it was okay(like my v2 19 better) but I think the 15 is the "sweet" spot like the v2 13m

Phantom I 15m. It does everything you guys are talking about, but looks better doing it :)

Seriously, though, I haven't flown any of the next gen arcs, but if the precursors are any indication, the 15m phanny is the most versatile kite I have owned. I love that size. The 19m venom is just too small of a window and the 13m venom is just too close to 15. For my weight / ability, I like the 10 / 15 combo. It is VERY clear which kite I should pull out on a given day, so I've taken to only bringing those 2. For your weight, you may wanna go bigger, but if it's low rolling resistance or ice, that's a much more versatile combo than the 19 /13 (or whatever the p2 / c2 equivalent is).
