Cquad's on a depower bar ?

Bladerunner - 13-6-2013 at 04:59 PM

When I was describing how depower is accomplished I got to thinking that the stiff frame of the Cquad may or may not take to a depower bar ?

Has anybody ever heard of this being tried ?

One of the locals at my buggy spot ONLY flies C-Quad's . Next time I see him I'll ask.

Hmm, never thought about trying a C-Quad on a depower bar...but it should work and be pretty sweet! I am sure there will be some tuning to get it just right but yea.

There use to be a C-Quad control bar that PL built. It was odd shaped and looked like a pair of bicycle handle bars but I believe the weird shape was designed to try and accomplish what a Depower bar does.

Interesting and worth a try. C-quads are fast kites, and I've always felt they were very sensitive to powering and depowering using handles. They fly more like a Revolution Shockwave or Supersonic, but with way more pull.

The old Lynn abr for them was very much like a swept back pair of mountain bike handlebars. Front lines attached at the ends, and rears nearer the center of the bar, if I recall correctly. That gave you more front line than rear line input in a turn. And you twisted the bar to pull the trailing edge in or out.

I have flown my HiArc 6m on long handles. Worked much better than a bar for me. You had depower along with really sensitive steering.

I thought the shape was to minimize oversteer when you only had one hand on the bar.

Advance Kites made a similar bar that was jointed at the bend points so you could tweak/fine tune the curvature.

Krumly hit on my thoughts about the AOA being tricky .

I knew about the original bar but am kind of amazed that nobody has tried this .

Now I have to ask myself if it is worth busting spars to figure it out ?

I found an old thread on Kite Crowd forum. Looks like it was power lines to inside, brakes to outside for C quads on the bent bar. Folks mentioned it worked well for Begos and Nasawing 5's as well.

Some old PL copy on Forever Flying website mentions it is possible to depower C quads with handles. It is about letting the brakes off to keep the kite flying fast at low AOA, but luffing is a concern. Pretty much my experience. I think my old C quad line card has notes about bridle tweaks to get them to a lower AOA, but with more risk of luffing and requiring more diligence at the handles.

I love the kites, spars or not.

Looking at the C-quad it's an evolution of the NPW kites. The odd shaped bar is to enable you to keep some tension on the TE. Using a depower bar would probably end up you using a very small percentage of it's travel as I imagine the brake input would be very sensitive. I have tried a depower bar on a NPW and could not get it to work successfully.

nasawing depowers very well push the bar and the wing floats like a flag :
