out yesterday 4-6pm really coming in nice on my 9M. out for about 2 hours tracked out over 25 miles and come to launch a friend, set the gopro pole
and go back out. make 3 passes in by the camera big air loops... on the 3rd i go up, loop AND THE KITE POPS OFF THE LINES! ALL 4 LINES BREAK right
at the kite , thankfully i was right at shore break.
kite falls on the beach bout 100 yds away. quite surreal, up and all lines and the kite flyin away kinda slo mo feel thing .
ALL at one time! all at the kite . 20 min early i was 3 miles out!
may have it on vid kite may be out of frame but not the drop. couple days i'll have it up.
WOW !! That's freaky... And lucky it didn't happen earlier... Glad you're ok PHREERIDER - 11-7-2012 at 06:47 AM
had 1-2 lines break but ALL 4 . the left overs are strange as well.
one line is completely gone, not on the bar, not on the kite , i assume it fell in the water? it broke in 2 places above the leader and at the
kite.
gonna lay it out and get a "exploded" view at the terminus end.
the absolute best line set ever had, almost 2 full seasons in the 2000 hour range.
when i got them i thought "they seem light" ....i got them from ANGUS flexifoil something, never knew the rating on them, maybe he did ..anyway
don't know. but thru 2 gusty winters on 13m tube snatching 200# around on the water.BeamerBob - 11-7-2012 at 06:57 AM
I guess you found the duty cycle for the lines! Did they give any visual signs making you think "Gotta replace these soon"?PHREERIDER - 11-7-2012 at 07:14 AM
the fuzz was already in bloom i knew it was coming.
now that i think about they where HQ , clear winder thing red, blue and grey fleck on the ends.
i had already "retipped" with new dacron sleeves at the kite end last fall, so THE FRAY AT THE SLEEVE JUNCTION is a indicator of USE, STRESS, and
TIME. if its blooming it want be long.
the whole line had started bloom , you would think where the lines cross for loops would be the fracture spot , BUT ALL pop off just past the
sleeving, with HIGH stress shock load...in the water (like heavy water start) and kite deep in power. except the last which was a loop snatch.
usually in the shore break best my memory tells me.erratic winds - 11-7-2012 at 08:27 AM
So crazy! Have had line failures, even multiple line fails, but never all 4! VERY GLAD you are not hurt!
Really hope the video caught it!PHREERIDER - 11-7-2012 at 09:07 AM
i know i was ramping in front of the camera just not sure the kite was in frame.
the let go wasn't violent or anything , more comical. since nothing was attached, zero flap and floundering.PHREERIDER - 11-7-2012 at 09:13 AM
just glad i did not have to swim... actually was late for a birthday party... FOR the GUY i WAS RIDING with at the beach park. birthday gift i gave

Here's a long story for you. I figured someone can learn from my near death experience... I had two break at the same time. My experience went bad
really quickly though. It was around 10 years ago when I was on the clueless side. I went out in 10-12 foot waves with side off wind. I was just
poping out the back side of a wave and the kite flagged out. A couple of friends were tow in surfing and came up right away with their jet ski. I
should have just let the kite go, but we started to try and "save it". Unknown to me, the two broken lines were rapping around my leg while I was
treading water. After 2-3 mins it was clear that my friends didn't know how to handle the kite in the water. I jumped onto of the "sled" that they
have attached to the jet ski, and I looked down to see my ankle completely bound by the two broken lines. I was closer to death than I had ever been
before. Waves were still breaking all around us, and I knew that if one hit the kite, I would be ripped off the ski. I yelled to my friend to get us
out of there. He gunned the ski, and the pull from the kite almost ripped my foot off. I screamed to slow down, and I managed to grab the bar an pull
tension off my foot. I held the bar under my body and prayed while he inched his way back out side the waves. Once we got outside, we found a really
rusty knife under the seat of the ski. I had never been so lucky my entire life.
Please, please, anyone reading this, if you ever break a line, get rid of the kite immediately. Don't even use your leash. Get rid of it! Hear me when
I say that you won't even realize the lines rapping around you!carltb - 11-7-2012 at 09:38 AM
ive has a doulbe line failure and i presume the front line went first, putting extra load on the rear line until it went pop.
so i presume the order of your snap went. front, front, rear, rear, or front, rear, front, rear.bigkid - 11-7-2012 at 09:57 AM
I worry about you, PHREE.PHREERIDER - 11-7-2012 at 09:58 AM
lines in the water are deadly NO DOUBT FLYFISH! i would have freaked out with JET SKI intake even remotely close. LET IT GO! offshore with a break
thats a big suck moment for sure. seems they always break in or near the wave break , the hot OFF/ON is when its gonna happen !
i'm sure there was sequence, sudden load change, one break then it amps the load on the rest and so on. in 1/2 sec. or so, but the one that
broke on both ends. with the "in hard "for the loop back line most likely went first
vid will help sort it outTodd - 11-7-2012 at 04:24 PM
Glad that you are safe and out of harms way Chad!AD72 - 11-7-2012 at 04:48 PM
I had a front line go during a jump a week ago. It made such a snap I started looking at my bar thinking it went. The kite started to pinwheel since
it was on both back lines so I pulled in the other good front line to kill the power in the kite. I also kept on getting the remnants of the slack
line around my ankle as I started wrapping the lines around the bar to self rescue. I stopped and focused on winding all the broken line on the bar
first.
I got to the kite and swam for a while. I was pretty far out but fortunately it was a busy day. Other kiters checked on me and were super cool. I
got picked up by boat that was supporting a downwinder. The kiter on the boat had his spreader bar hook snapped off.beachrights - 11-7-2012 at 05:31 PM
Alright...Enough already! I thought this was a happy place!? These stories are freakin me out!!!Kamikuza - 11-7-2012 at 05:33 PM
Crikey! One, ok ... two, hmm. 4? Sabotage.
There's a mad women in NZ who thinks she world for Department of Conservation and goes around a beach near the capital city, cutting kite lines.
Perhaps you've got one of them...?PHREERIDER - 12-7-2012 at 01:30 PM

Im just totally impressed you got video on it. Watching it was very suspenseful wondering which of the two kites it was going to happen to, yellow, no
green, wait maybe the yellow, no here comes the green one again, snap. :bigok:
Whoa...
crazyherb - 15-7-2012 at 11:58 PM

Can you post up some pics of your lines? I'm curious as to what "about to break" lines look like ... I've got spares for a couple of my kites cos I
*think* they need replacing ...PHREERIDER - 16-7-2012 at 05:19 AM
impromptu camera setup, the guy on cab(yellow) i gave him my JL133. dude is stoked. amazed WHEN WHERE AND HOW it happened . it was the last 20 min
of the session. thankfully i was in close
line failure is common, all 4 at once ? ...thats rare but fresh is good plan at the end of a season! if they are blooming time to change.
got a tidy layout images of the exploded remnants, it imports on the next series.
kinda looks like a rear line when at the redirect i could see the kite clearly when i went down...in the broken lines they're knotted! curious
recoil or floated itself into a knot.??.arkay - 16-7-2012 at 11:30 PM
freaky...very odd for all four to snap. Typically just one will go; though if you had enough force on the kite and one went they all might get a
quick strain, and you were looping... at least the waves were tiny Did they
snap at the same place? Maybe wear related?
I had a kite dump on the outside last week and I got my ass dragged under a few times when sneaker waves took the kite for a ride. next time I just
let the kite go :/PHREERIDER - 17-7-2012 at 06:12 AM
all at the kite , at the sleeving knot. one line broke in 2 places at the kite and at bar end. its totally gone. waves aren't the issue hear its
the current/chop . 2 ft chop and small waves are essence of the seemingly flat spot. this is a falling tide against dead on shore 20-30mphPHREERIDER - 7-9-2012 at 05:04 AM
here 's the line shot of the breaks, all at the kite end plus the red line broke in 2 spots! above the leader as well so its absent. the lines at
the kite sleeves broke right at the edge of the sleeve, not inside.
the knot on the blue is an oddity for sure, no idea how it got there.Mostly Harmless - 8-9-2012 at 05:42 AM
I would contact the manufacture of the kite and see if they have any interest in reviewing this video, I have never heard of all four lines snapping
at once. It looks like the kite goes slack just before it powers up and breaks the lines, the tension on those lines must have been pretty heavy.
Glad you are okacampbell - 8-9-2012 at 08:54 AM
Definitely can see the front set go first, and with the sudden increase in AoA, it had to be a huge stress on the rear set.
So glad all ended well, close to shore and kite recovered without bonking someone.
Will definitely check for fuzz on my lines. "If the lines ' in bloom, they're gonna blow soon!"
