I need a light wind buggy engine

pbc - 23-2-2012 at 09:26 PM

I need a light wind buggy engine. My current quiver starts working well at 7 mph of wind and that's just not low enough for what I often have to work with. I want a light wind engine that will power me in a gnat's fart.

I have a 10m Ultralight Peel that was awesome even in near nothing before it got blown out. I want a kite light enough to fly in almost and big enough to generate enough pull to get my 165ish pounds moving on the beach hard pack.

I've been thinking about a Vapor or Reactor II in about the 10m size, but I am sure there are some other good options out there. I've been having so much fun with the Arcs I've just not paid much attention to light wind wings.

A big ol' 10m PKD Century II would Haul ya around real good too! Just sayin' ,not that I'm biased or anything....

HQ - Prodigy
PL - u nailed the 2
PKD - WG is right

My VIP works well in 6-7 I would imagine a BIII 10.5 would be a great option for sub 7.

I love that video lad. Still hard to believe 7.25x the wind WOW :shocked2::shocked2::shocked2:

Yeah but that's the skill of the pilot - not the kite :P

I'll never forget the day Angus and I ran our 10.8 RIIs on Jekyll Island. Winds for the most part 4-7 and running in the mid 20s with the lines singing. It will launch in a puff and once you get it moving it doesn't stop. I think an 11 or 13m Vapor would be even better, just a tad lower wind range. 18 Phanny works in the same territory as well if you can fill and launch it. No experience with the jojos, yaks, or big PKDs.

hehehe, 16m is a lot of kite ... see bill drift.

Vapors are 11.2, 13.2, 16.1

Reactor II 8.6, 10.2

since we doing RePlay : https://vimeo.com/24450127

Grant (11.2), Bill (16.1), Sunny J (16.1), and myself (11.2) @ 1:30 seconds you'll see us catch up to one other.

Yes, this video was an influence on me with regard to this topic.

Thank you all for your input. I probably have no budget for this, but you have to start somewhere. :-)

I wonder how low you could go with a Flysurfer Speed3 21...
Not that I have one to test... but that would be interesting to see.
Probably way out of any logical/sane person's budget...
;)

Was a post not long ago about this kite, looked pretty in the sky in 1.5 mph

Have you thought about a nasa wing. The price for one is low compared to foils.

Interesting to see that a 15m Phanny could keep in the same air that those bigger FB did...

Drewculous - 24-2-2012 at 10:50 AM

Have susan make you a 15+m nasa! Talk about low wind engines!

Vapors are sexy tho

19m SA2 arived from post office and i took it (and wind meter and harness) straight to a small local park. wind- 1.8 gusting to almost 4 mph.
didn't even think it would launch or stay launched but it did and i was static jumping.
second time out static with no wind meter...pretty sure it wouldn't launch. my brother just wanted to see it unrolled in all it's glory. this time there was really no wind and i did not even put on my harness. the leaves on all the trees were pretty much still with the occasional flickering. just for kicks i popped it up (with no harness on) it took a lot of running to get it launched but once it did launch it stayed up so i went and put on the harness and with work and i was again static jumping. really crazy:wee:
another time...my brother couldn't get the 17m Speed1.5 launched while I was tearing it up (buggying) with the 19m SA2.

What weldngod said, or a 12 m PKD century. Then it is all about skill. If the air is moving you can be flying.
