tridude - 9-10-2011 at 05:15 PM

welcome....................I have a friend in Witchita/Cheeny, Ill ask her....................what are you flying, how long, short/long term goals?

tridude - 9-10-2011 at 05:27 PM

a google earth view of the area may work as well.............................

Kitekansas - 9-10-2011 at 05:47 PM

Hi
What are my goals, I have a lot. Lets see. We are skateboarding/watersport family. So we are trying with the kite. I seen some kiters at the lake when I first started. So its something I have got the family involved in. During the summer I worked with the hydra kite when we was at the lake. I have worked with a teacher and a group of good people at Cheney. I think we will get our Epic kites soon for the water, so we are still learning. But I have flown the 9m and I think Im ok. I try are hard. But we are also trying to learn mountain boarding with a kite, we have a longboard, and want to learn snowboarding with a kite when winter gets here. So as far as land kites right now we have Hydra and a scout 4m. We just would like to know if their is any good places to go that isnt the high school or farm land. I thought maybe their might be an old airfield somewhere close. The high school is to close to busy streets and I wouldn't go on someones farm land.
Google earth might work if I kinda have an idea where to look because a lot is farmland aroung here

tridude - 9-10-2011 at 05:58 PM

my friend lives on a farm....................Ill ask her about flying permission during the winter/snow months..................Epic kites are pretty sweet with alot of range from what Ive read. You and the fmaily are gonna be busy year round with kiting it appears.....................alot of info here on the forum so dont hesitate to ask. Foils are the kite of choice her but there are a few of use on inflatables. Not many questions if any go unanswered here, again welcome!

There is an old air field that was used for WW2. It is kind of centerally locate in Kanasa. I will try and remember the town it is located in. I know that some members of the forum have buggyed there in the past.

You know us centrally located people should set up a buggy event. Not sure where yet but the closest thing we have is dbbb and that is around family time. Maybe Kansas is the perfect place to set it up. I have kinda looked around OK and found nothing. The field I fly at normally, starts to get really small when you get 6 people on it. A couple of square miles would be heaven. Anyone know of any such place in the central US area. Im sure there has to be some place out there.

Kitekansas - 14-10-2011 at 06:00 AM

Lol, I don't have a buggy. I know someone that does here almost got him to sell his buggy to me:) I'm sure he will join the fun. He does more kiting on water. We have skateboards, longboards, and mountain board.
I have some questions
Can buggies go on all terrain?
How many acres do we need?
I did find a place that has a lot of hills it's a place where they moved the dirt when they built the service center at cessna. But I don't know if the hills effected the wind.
We are still new at this so picking a spot can be difficult when we aren't sure.
We go to the high school a lot they have a huge field but it's next to a busy street and their are rules:(
Such winter is coming it would be nice to find a place we can have a fire to keep warm when not kiting, and maybe have a few beers. Neither ones can you do at the high school.
Then you have to give everyone their space at the high school. The other day someone was teaching someone hang gliding there which looked very dangerous in such a public place. Dangerous is putting it nicely:)

Kitekansas - 14-10-2011 at 07:41 AM

The high school is a option. I live maybe at the most 2 blocks from the high school and the field is pretty big, just a lot of traffic north and west of the field.

Ed Crabbs - 14-10-2011 at 11:04 AM

Kitekansas - 14-10-2011 at 11:17 AM

The kite I can fly pretty good. I have my 3m and 4m kite for land. Then we have a 9m and 11m. I had a teacher give me a lesson when I first got my 3m and practiced most of the summer at the lake I feel better when I crash and burn on water when learning. Then I learned basics on the 9m at the lake. I don't have all the kites on my wish list yet. But my 3m kite can drag me pretty good if I don't pay attention, lol. I have been slammed twice on the ground, it's not a good feeling but I just get back up. I can get on the board but never go in the direction I want, lol. I go to the school about 4 times a week. Later in the day when school is going.
Why don't buggies have a brake, I was just curious. My mountainboard does so I was just curious

Ed Crabbs - 14-10-2011 at 11:20 AM

i AM JUST GUESSING MAYBE A ALFAFA FIELD DURING THE WITER MONTHS FIELDS THAT HAVE BEEN TURNED ARE REALLY ROUGH YOU CANT HAVE NO TRASH ON THE SURFACE ITS A TALL ORDER BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE

soccerflyer - 2-11-2011 at 08:18 AM

Herrington airport is the best place I have found around here to buggy at. I also got permission a while back to buggy at great bend airport. That would probably be closer. We should DEFINITELY put together an event in Kansas. It is a great place for land kiting traction sports. I bet one of the two airports would let us host an event there if we went through the proper channels.

I bought an old Best Waroo (tube depower kite) from one of the Cheney kite surfer guys - Lloyd. I also met Eric Fast and some other guys there. Kite surfing would be my ultimate goal. But Buggying and land boarding would be sweet too. I have a mountain board, but am too chicken to try it. Just as I was starting to get used to my Waroo it sprung a leak.

I don't have much money so I can't just buy what I want. The only other kite I have is the first kite I got - a Pansh Blaze 3M.

All us Kansas folks should hook somewhere locally to fly before it gets too cold. There was a guy in wichita who tried to put some events together, but not many showed. I wanted to, but had previous engagements durring his dates.

But we should keep trying. I bet we could easily put together a Kansas Kite Club and get all of us kiters together. That would be awesome.

A kite can drag a buggy sideways, do you think wheel brakes would have much effect? I think the brakes on you MTB are for downhill, not kiting. For kiting they had better be air brakes. ;)

Sweet, Thanks!! I am gonna check out that one by Yoder. That would be a great close place to buggy. Thanks sam. It is amazing what you can find with google

Kitekansas - 3-11-2011 at 04:16 PM

soccerflyer,
I just started kiteboarding to:) I started with my 3m hydra at the beginning of summer. We also skateboard and do watersports so I wanted to add a kite since the first time I seen the kites at the lake.
Waroo 9m if you just busted a bladder you can replace those. If it has a rip you can fix that to. Have you gone out to cheney with the 9m and the harness? Do you fly the 9m on ground? Have you tried water dragging? Im hoping this Saturday will make it above 65 degrees so I can go out. You can always come out and watch. Their are so many nice people their.
Im still learning the whole kiteboarding thing on water. I pretty much understand the concept but am freakin scared to death. Thats why its important to me to learn the big kite on water first. Its not as hard when you crash and I enjoy the lake. When its this cold you need a wetsuit

Kitekansas - 3-11-2011 at 04:27 PM

cont
Ed that has a post is in Hutchinson. Him and a buddy of his has buggies. I dont have a buggy yet.
I do have a mtn board. Its fun. Do you know how to ride the mtn board without the kite? I learned going to the NW part of Sedgwick park and going down that hill before I tried with the smaller kites. We use a 2.7m and a 4m on land. Im not ready to try my 9m on land yet. But all the cheney guys use their bigs kites on land. A lot of them snowboard with the kites to. A couple of them have a buggy and mtn boards.
Do you get on facebook. I think its KS Kiteboarders.
yeah we just use our little kites for land until we get having a board and kite at the same time down. The big kites are to expensive for me to use on land right now and I would crash and that would hurt with the big kite, lol

Kitekansas - 3-11-2011 at 04:46 PM

The lake is soo far down you can buggy and mtn board on the beach. I dont know if buggy wheels would work on the kinda rocky shore but the mtn board will. I think Nic brought his mtn board out last week. We go to either NW part of Sedgwick park or Northwest. I know there is another place in Haysville but I dont know where my husband does I think. But we enjoy flying the kites whenever its windy, sometimes the gusts can f*** with you a little around here. I like 15-30mph winds I have a harder time flying the kite in lighter winds and anything stronger Im not ready for yet.
