Fairhaven park beach on lake ontario ny

Frathouse - 28-7-2011 at 08:18 AM

Any one here know if it's okay to kitesurf from fairhaven. I'm camping here till Saturday. Winds are not great right now but are building for a good session on little sodus bay. The lady at the park station wouldn't give me an answer and told me to come back later to talk with her boss. Hopefully it's okay but if I read the regulations correctly kite flying is considered a regulated activity and might be out right banned. But if you read on it seems like being alive in a NY state park might also be illegal. Beautiful place way to many rules!!!

That's funny, Brad, because I fly at Lakeview WMA whenever I'm flying at Southwick Beach. They don't bother me(in the buggy) as long as I don't bother anyone else, and I've seen people out on the water here also. Probably the employee wasn't exactly sure of the reg. so wanted to let her boss deal with it. I think once you shw your skill, they won't have any worries. Get some!

Just looked at the website for the park, and they list things such as powerboating/waterskiing, and also windsurfing, so what can they say? Get some video, too! :wee:

Hey Bob

Yeah I finally got a ruling and it's all good. I also spoke with the lifeguards to make sure they approved of my launch spot. I got the feeling that most people don't ask permission first because they were shocked that I asked. Just trying to do my part and not cause any problems for any locals. This is a lovely spot and I hope the wind will cooperate and give me a good session soon.

My guess is that because its such a busy park and they have designated swimming areas ,they are going to give you a hard time. If the winds look good for Southwick it would be worth your while to drive north on 104 to rt3 , ocean like beach , pretty much unregulated. Kite on the water, buggy , back water kayack , nature trails , 3-4 miles of undeveloped sandy beach , pretty cool place. EDIT: just saw your post , very good , have fun.

Was really hoping I would get a chance to ride on lake Ontario. Wind never cooperated so no video no stories. :(

Too bad Ma Nature didn't cooperate, would have loved to see/hear those stories. I, on the other hand, had an excellent day yesterday at Black Pond WMA.(A couple miles North of Southwick Beach) Wind was onshore, and I had a nice chunk of beach to myself. Still trying to get the video uploaded, will post it when I do.

yeah it was weird on saturday. it looked like the wind on the water to the north was much stronger. I saw lots of sail boats hauling ass. I was tempted to drive to southwick but being with family i was stuck. I can't complain to much the bikini scenery on the beach was fantastic didn't even bother to break out my book. :)

We just got home from camping right down the road (Rt.90) from you. Turning Stone Resort in Verona NY. Nowhere and no time to fly around that joint. Saw a KISS concert Thursday night, rained all day Friday, chilled at the pool Sat, 6 hour drive home today.

i spent a few days there 4th of july. i must bbe spoiled becaue the launch didn't look very good to me. lots of shoreline but rocky and debri cluttered. my plan was to drive my truck up loaded with kites, boards, and kayaks and pulling my motorcycle on a trailer and staying a week. at $800 for gas alone, i instead rode my mc up there and had a blast. can't say too much for NY, but the journey there and back was great!
