Florida Vaction- spots?

sofa king - 10-7-2011 at 12:27 PM

Im looking into a vacation for the first week in August in florida. I plan to spend 2-6 days at the beaches and camp the whole time. Anybody fimilar with nice and friendly spots to fly?

-Also i should note that i suck in the water and this would pretty much be my first time if i can get up on the board. So where's a good spot for beginners in Florida?

-Also wheres a good spot for land-boarding and/or static flying with a big open sandy area?

-Places to avoid? i heard there are some kite bans in some states.....

Thanks

The Keys were really nice and there's a long stretch of camping right on the beach (pretty much) at Bahia Honda State Park. But yes - kiting is very regulated. Check fksa.org - you'll find loads if info. Heck, sign up and get the scoop.

If there's wind I'd send you to Otherside Boardsports in a heartbeat. They are in Islamorada. Tell Mike that guy Kelly from Canada sent you...he'll charge you double ; )

Only placed that I've been to in Florida is Destin. I kited with a few local folks on the bay side of Okaloosa island. Lots of campground nearby in numerous state parks just 20 minutes from Destin. Planning to head back there in a couple weeks if everything pans out.

google huegonot park in jacksonville fla. camping there is $12 a night per site for non-locals. the campground has three sides on the water. one side is the st johns river--camp 5 feet away if you want. the other side is a tidal lagoon. it's at least 1/4 mile across. this is where the newbys kite because it's shallow, flat, and no current. and between the "pond" and the river is the ocean. this is a favored spot for the surfers, the buggy riders and all kitesurfers that can stay up wind. the beach is super wide at low tiide and driving is allowed on the beach. the north end of the beach is a channel that can give you an opposing current to the wind. we call this area the 'flats' because it is shallow at all but high tide. if you need lessons, there is a guy who teaches out there. he is very good and prices are better than most in north fla and Way better than the rest of fla! weekdays, you'll have the campground all to yourself and only a few kiters if there is wind as this pllace is 30 minutes out of town "out in the country". bring your fishing poles too as the fishermen do quite well here too. jet ski too if ya got one.

St Augustine Beach/Anastasia State Park! I just came back from there a few weeks ago and had a blast. You can camp at Anastasia State Park. The beaches on the state park are huge and flat, hardpacked, and just north of the the public access is uncrowded even on the weekend. The park is Buggy friendly too which is rare. They just told me when I checked in to be safe and that I should have no problem just North from the access which is about a couple hundres yards from the access point. People with all their crap just dont migrate that far from the entrance.

St Augustine/Anastasia area has more to do than you'll ever have time for. Plenty of restaurants, kids entertainment and activity and shopping out the wazoo. The best part except for the buggying is that the touristy areas were never that crowded. Traffic not bad at all. Not at all like Myrtle Beach or Orlando. Don't bother to buggy on Vilano Beach--its too narrow and steep. Also, cool Kite Shop there to visit--Extreme Kites in St Augustine.

I've only been to the cocoa beach / melbourne area. TONS of flat water as far as the eye can see. Don't know much about their wind season right now. But I hear the keys, miami, and tampa are also nice.
