NABX Rides from Las Vegas

flyjump - 25-1-2011 at 11:10 AM

Just wanted to start a thread to help out myself and those who need rides from the airport to the event.

I'm arriving on monday the March 28, still don't know what time because I'm waiting for tickets to be booked still....should be anytime this week.

If you need help, or can pick people up then post here

thanks PKF family!

PHREERIDER - 25-1-2011 at 02:05 PM

thursday VEGAS to Primm about noon time. if anyone needs a ride.

BTW the last year the rental car was est.d on the web site around $120 for thurs-sun and ended up being almost $300! did not even get a kiss!

nocando - 25-1-2011 at 06:04 PM

Is there any publications that will help an aussie drive on the wrong side of the road.

Will be very weird :bigok:

flyjump - 25-1-2011 at 06:36 PM

nocando, if i'm riding with you the only thing that will keep you driving on the wrong side of the road is me screaming at the top of my lungs:P

When I was biking around England and Wales I found I had to say my mantra every day: Keep left look right. Otherwise I would keep walk into traffic. For you it will be Keep right look left.

BeamerBob - 26-1-2011 at 08:40 AM

I was in England about 10 years ago and had horrors every few minutes when we would round a turn or top a hill and someone else was in the right lane. I'm not sure I ever got completely used to it in 9 days. Maybe its better if you're driving.

Well the good news is that within 5 minutes away from the airport you will be in raw desert with few other cars around (except for Friday afternoon when they line the highway from California to the casinos).

Glenn, don't forget the Roo scarers. Mine were stolen by some pissed-off seagulls. I'll owe you a few beers.

flyjump - 26-1-2011 at 09:40 AM

woohoooo! my ticket is booked. I'm arriving in the vegas airport at 7 pm monday night. anybody wanna pick me up? :bouncy:

Craig Sparkes - 26-1-2011 at 11:13 AM

nocando - 26-1-2011 at 02:57 PM

Angus how many sets of scarers would you need U2U me at some time

kiteboyza - 27-1-2011 at 03:35 PM

Thursday March 31 Vegas to Primm around 8pm and back Primm to Vegas Monday 4 April around 7:30am

popeyethewelder - 2-2-2011 at 01:51 PM

We should hit Vegas airport around midday on the Wednesday 30th....does anyone know which rental company offers the best deal, they all seem to start off at a reasonable cost, then when you have finished the price has doubled...

acampbell - 2-2-2011 at 06:56 PM

Rip had said he had good luck with priceline.com. I had used Avis in the past only because of accumulated points from business travel. You don't need much. It is a desert dirt road to buggytown but flat with few bumps at the start and driving over the curb is the biggest obstacle

Sparkles... don't forget that I have a bunch of your wheels/tires from last year stored in my garage for you guys. I will be at the pre-event... we can hook up there.

The secret to low cost rental cars is not buying the insurance. If you use a gold or silver card to secure it, you have insurance! Also many of you have paid for rental car insurance on your own auto policy, check it out.

Before renting, familiarize yourself with all your insurance options. If you already have car insurance, call your insurance agent and find out if you will have enough coverage under your existing policy. You could also call your credit card company: Many offer coverage when you charge the rental. In either case, these two options may be cheaper than purchasing insurance at the rental counter.
Which insurance is better?
Your auto insurance! Usually!
If you have car insurance, the type of coverage you bought, along with its deductibles, usually applies to rental cars as well.

acampbell - 3-2-2011 at 07:27 AM

Another thing we take for granted that newcomers may not know is that you only have to assemble and transport the buggy once at arrival and then departure. The knocked down buggy can usually get from and to the airport in a compact car with the back seats folded down. During the week at night you just leave the buggy on the lake-bed shore in BuggyTown next to or in the tent, and the campers look after things. So you don't need a big SUV to carry the buggy around assembled. Kind of like valet parking!

kiteboyza - 3-2-2011 at 07:52 AM

cheapoair.ca got my flights and car with them

flyjump - 3-2-2011 at 09:11 AM

i'll be camping on the lakebed with some of the other PL guys......i can keep an eye on your buggies at night and make sure nobody messes with them......although I may need a place to sit from time to time ;)

nocando - 3-2-2011 at 01:22 PM

Angus thanks for that info was going to hire a ginormous gas guzzler

acampbell - 3-2-2011 at 02:06 PM

Yeah I got a jeep the first time there and it was nice but not necessary. Unless you take a side trip to someplace like the Colorado river (nice trip), there is no place to drive anyway.

KAZEDOKA - 3-2-2011 at 07:45 PM

If any one is flying in using Southwest Airlines, they offer special rental rates through their web site.

SALVA - 6-2-2011 at 01:29 AM

Hi evrybody!
I will arrive at international LA ariport on the 27th March at 8:00. Is someone intrested in shearing the ride to primm????

acampbell - 17-2-2011 at 10:24 AM

I arrive Monday about 5 pm and am picking up a car if anyone needs a ride. Unfortunately at this point I have to leave Thursday AM early to be back at another job on Friday. No good red-eyes on SW airlines.

Popeye I hope we can cross paths on Wednesday night

acampbell - 17-2-2011 at 10:31 AM

BTW on Priceline.com I got a 4-door mid-side for $59 a day with all taxes and fees. (no insurance- I already have it on the card and my car policy) A bonus is that it is with Advantage Rent A Car, which is *in the terminal*, not at the off-site rental center. A big deal if you have had to get so much gear on and off the shuttle by yourself. Always creates a scene but at least people are nice about it and the driver will help.

I hope so too Angus...we will be extremely tired after out flight, because we would have been up from 1am your time, but I certainly hope to hit the bar in the evening for a while, and thanks for the heads up about the car rental

Oh while I am at it, to all at NABX please dont be offended if I dont recognize you or know your name....its an age thang...I think it should be compulsory for everyone to wear a tshirt with their forum name on to give me a fighting chance lol

Good news. I was worried you wouldn't make it this year. Right now we have Wednesday to ride, but I'll do a last minute bargaining with house ways and means for an early am Tuesday departure.

I was wondering how big of a vehicle you got Angus as I rented an economy car for only $13.00 a day at priceline.com (you have to start your bid really low)

Also...if anyone needs a ride, I arrive on Monday the 28th at about 1:00pm

See you all (not soon enough)

you get all the good deals when you look like the travelocity gnome

ripsessionkites - 17-2-2011 at 07:52 PM

OUCH, that one was low.

NOTE, all CAR RENTALS are in one place now. doesnt matter what company you book with, just jump on the car rental shuttle at the airport and it will take you there.

Once your stuff is on the playa it pretty much stays there for the week. 80% of De Dutch are wake and already on the drylake. Im a late riser so I just call whoever and see if they left yet. We're all family so getting a car pool or holding onto the back of some vehicle is possible.

Those that dare you can walk from Hotel to Playa, takes about 1 to 2 hours (bring water). I have never done this but IF I see you walking Ill take you tandem to:
A. close to the Power Lines (entrance)
B. camp

i like priceline.com because its like gambling I guess.

1. take a look at the current rates
2. its better to bid for the car than to buy outright
3. when you bid, start super low, and move up $1 per try. sooner or later it accepts.

De Dutch + 2 Canadians got an SUV from Mar. 26 to April 5 for something like 320 Euros.

DAKITEZ - 17-2-2011 at 09:39 PM

In case you are wondering ... NO ... nobody lets Ricardo drive a car. No person in the car feels safe when the driver is too small to see over the steering wheel :saint:

But seriously there are always people driving back and forth to buggy camp. A ride would be easy to come by if you needed one. Just hang around the parking lot and look for someone getting into the most nasty, dirty, dusty car you have seen ... chances are they are headed for the playa.

acampbell - 18-2-2011 at 06:53 AM

Ken and Ricardo
Thanks. I will take a 2nd look at priceline.com and look for the bidding option

betosoria - 16-3-2011 at 01:17 AM

It would be great if I can share a ride to Primm.
I will arrive at McCarren tuesday march 29 at 15:00.
Can't wait to be on the Playa.
Saludos from Mexico.

nocando - 16-3-2011 at 01:39 AM

Hi there all, can I book some time with one of you natives, to aid my driving skills as

I have never driven on your side of the road before.

I dont want any weirded out happenings :embarrased:

flyjump - 16-3-2011 at 04:46 AM

haha yeah man! its just too bad i'll be there a few days after you. I remember when I drove in England this summer, Joy kept screaming at me to stay on the left side of the road

yes its the correct side, its you guys who drive on the wrong side lol

csa_deadon - 16-3-2011 at 05:43 AM

I like to drive down the middle. I find the look on the drivers faces rather enjoyable.

flyjump - 16-3-2011 at 05:46 AM

The roundabouts make since when you drive on the left. Driving around them on the right seems weird

BeamerBob - 16-3-2011 at 08:46 AM

Even though they drive on the wrong side of the road, :frog: I will say that while I was there, the drivers in UK were better than I'd ever seen. Very good lane discipline on the (UK word for interstate highway). The roundabouts even with 3 lanes, seemed to work seamlessly.

markite - 16-3-2011 at 08:56 AM

When I go to visit Fiona in Scotland and she comes here - we both say just remember that as the driver you always want to be to the centre of the road.
They've been adding roundabouts all over the place in the area I live in Ontario but they are far smaller than the UK and then there are crosswalks and nobody knows how to enter and exit properly - getting better but still the number one place for accidents (here, not in the UK).
What amazed me driving in the desert was when we missed a turn once and drove up to Fort Irwin and there is one really long flat straight stretch (10 miles long?) and the huge number of crosses indicating accidents - seemed like every few hundred yards on what looks like an easy road. Speed/falling asleep/weather?

I believe motorway is what you are looking for Bob...70mph unless otherwise stated, normally 3 lanes wide, sometimes 2 sometimes 4 lanes

Ginge - 16-3-2011 at 02:24 PM

Hey Guys! I know this is pretty late notice and im sorry for that!

Unfortunatly, its my final year of University and i have a Business Presentation on the day the other UK riders fly out, so i am arriving in Las Vegas on 24th March at 3pm.

I was wondering if there was anyone heading to the Pre-event at Harper lake on this day, an whether they would have space for me and the two bags i will be flying with. (my buggy and other kit will be there already)

Cheers guys. CANT WAIT to catch up with everyone again this year!

Will Mckean

Bladerunner - 16-3-2011 at 04:36 PM

I get in Sat the 26th at about 5:30pm and will be driving by Primm headed south.
Looks like I will be heading into the airport for a pick up Wed. at 6pm if that works for anyone let me know.

Bladerunner - 16-3-2011 at 04:45 PM

The left side is the right side....
