Feyd - 6-12-2010 at 05:38 AM

1) Must get ice buggy.

2) Ice buggy going over wet pressure ridge looks wicked sketch.

3) MUST GET AN ICE BUGGY.

That looks the nuggets.

Feyd - 6-12-2010 at 10:44 AM

Oh yeah, and that has to be some kind of record for hangtime when that one rider pole vaulted in the crack.

Ozzy - 6-12-2010 at 11:32 AM

yep, it was a nice xxperience ,....so calm during the flight, looking to the sky,...and thinking,...damn,...that's goin to hurt,....

BeamerBob - 6-12-2010 at 01:26 PM

It would seem that ice should be the ultimate surface for what we do. Are the lower (than beach or dry lake bed) record speeds more to do with room to accelerate and winds? I feel like even I could go these speeds given suitable winds on the dry lake bed, yet these top riders in the world are 25-30 mph off their dry lake best speeds. What makes high speeds less reachable on ice?

markite - 6-12-2010 at 01:56 PM

I know we've done over 60mph on ice with ice buggies but it's just so rare anymore that we get a chance to get out on clean ice. There was some patchy ice for a week last year but most of the time it's got rough spots, rippled, pressure cracks, refrozen slush ruts etc etc - all of that constantly makes you slow down and check your track etc. When you get the black ice you can really move. The last time we got out for a good ice run was maybe 5 years ago. Just crap ice around here 98% of the time.

Really just condition dependant in my opinion. The ice changes everytime the temp changes and everytime it snows. Ice that has air pockets (due to temp change/snow melt etc) seems to be a bit slower because the blade penetrates deeper into the ice. Clear black ice is fast yet the blades don't hook up quite as well. Combine surface changes with the relatively few times you get 35+ mph winds along with how often you can get out there when these conditions happen to arise makes it tough to get those high speed runs. Plus you need a lake open enough to do it. The closest chance we have to get those speeds is on Lake Champlain at Kitestorm in VT. Large enough area where you can really open it up. Locally we can get into the 40s but will soon need to turn around (small lakes). 60's would be possible at another lake near me but snowmobiles quickly turn the ice into a nearly unrideable surface.

Ivanpah is definately a gem for those who live near it. Fast surface for the majority of the year, great winds due to geography and plenty large enough to really go for broke.

Wow, that was quite a get off Ozzy!
The ice didn't look very clean and you guys were hauling a$$
You said the GoPro didn't survive, but did you get footage on the card? That would be epic video!

I want to do this! The lake here is 40 miles long. Should be enough to get up to max speed, eh? :bouncy:

Amazing capture of the OBE. Bet you were a little slow in the morning!
