JIBE 2011 Links and Registration OPEN

 Pages:  1

acampbell - 26-11-2010 at 09:17 AM

Hey Gang,

I have the JIBE 2011 web page up here. Dates are still Wednesday May 18 through Saturday May 21.

Main changes for 2011...

Probably going to bag the Friday night dinner at Blackbeards in favor of a picnic lunch on Thursday or Friday. The group is getting bigger and the need for pre-selected menu choices for a group this size makes things difficult. Also, by that time on Friday night, most people are literally and figuratively burnt and exhausted. Tides are late in the afternoon so a noon lunch will not interfere with buggy time since the beach will still be small.

Runs to the Shipwreck 3 1/2 miles to the south of Kite Beach will again be the favorite goal once the SE seabreazes kick in and there will be special rewards for those who make it. Pennants will be planted in the sand on the other side of the wreck and you will have to bring one back to signify that you made it there.

I wanted to move the staging area for Saturday to the southern part of the Island for Saturday in order to stay south of the few packs of sunbathers near hotels, but this will not be possible. This would require roadside parking at the only buggy-friendly access point and the Jekyll Island Authority does not want this since there will be traffic to the Soccer Complex to the south. We will stage at the same place as usual. Many prefer this anyway since there are more facilities nearby there. Weekday access to the southern stretches and the shipwreck will be normally un-fettered.

WildWood Buggy Bash will not conflict with JIBE dates, so we expect a much larger field of participants. WHOOP WHOOP!

Low tides will be pretty late in the day, which is good since that most often coincides with favorable sea breezes. use the morning for family time with shopping and sightseeing. Looks like we will have a lot of new JIBE first-timers this time, so I will likely reorganize a guided Sea Turtle Center Tour during one morning at high tide.

There will once again be a Triathalon on Saturday, but it will be in the morning and will be gone by the time the beach is usable, after 1pm (again, low tides are late)

The shopping Center and convention center are gone to the wrecking ball, as is that section of road, so there will be lots of construction and well marked detours (see map on the JIBE web page). This will not affect the beach or JIBE except for driving there, and maybe parking.

There is more information about the Jekyll Island Revitalization Project here

Most of the old shops and market have moved to 1/2 mile north of Blackbeards to a temporary shopping center in commercial trailers (it really is nicer than that sounds).

The new Gas station with Flash Foods convenience store and Dairy Queen should be open by then (Jan. - Feb. 2011), located near the island entrance at the old gas station site. (Edit: Open and running; very nice)

The foster wheel program will be in place allowing participants to ship their buggies without wheels (saving money, bulk and hassle) and adopt a set of wheels for the event. I have a commercial shipping address available.

For those wishing to save a few bucks off the Jekyll Island hotels, there is everything you need at I-95's exit 29. I have added a new map and directory of the area here. It is just 11 miles from Jekyll.

Registration is now up and open with links in the JIBE page Here

The link on the JIBE page will take you to secure purchase of registration on the CWS site, where you can use credit cards.

Go direct to the purchase page here

I have a JIBE Guide PDF (click to open or right click to save) that you can download. It has directions, maps, checklist, schedule, registration and waiver forms for faxing.

If you just want to download the Waiver and fax it to me (number is on the form) prior to the event then you have more time to buggy.

Please pre-register so that I know what to plan for. If you want to pay at the event, you can register on the CWS web site and mark select "Pay by Check/ Money Order"

shehatesmyhobbies - 26-11-2010 at 10:50 AM

Starting to get worked up about this event! I will be making the commitment as soon as possible! This is going to be a blast!

tridude - 26-11-2010 at 12:53 PM

acampbell - 28-11-2010 at 08:32 AM

Updated with new photos and maps...

cheezycheese - 28-11-2010 at 08:46 AM

I assume we leave the adopted wheels behind after the event Angus...?

Yes, its a service provided to attendees. It will take several events to cover the costs of Angus doing this, as well as storiing them in between. Props to Angus for offering this to anyone flying in.

acampbell - 28-11-2010 at 10:10 AM

Yeah I will find them permanent homes or store them for next time.

The granite Flintstone wheels I'm getting for Ricardo will be left on the beach as anchors to tie off our ARC's

Taper123 - 28-11-2010 at 12:33 PM

Do those granite wheels come in wide/bigfoot sizes too?

Just make sure the granite is available in PINK.

Taper123 - 2-12-2010 at 07:09 PM

Not that I need it... but did they finally fix the handicap ramp to the beach by where the event is?

acampbell - 3-12-2010 at 06:24 AM

Yes, the new Great Dunes park 700' to the south of Kite Beach is now open and features a handicap ramp down to the beach. It is what I use for the big Ivanpah buggy. There are three steps up to the big deck and the wheelchair ramp for that is too narrow for larger buggies, but the main ramp down to the beach is 7 1/2 feet wide. Note that the ramp does not reach the hard-pack, and there is still a minor incline in the soft sand to get to the main beach and hard-pack.

There are a couple of pics here.

It would still be a bit difficult in a wheelchair but passable with crutches.

If anyone remembers the shopping center at Jekyll Island, here is what it looks like now...

...don't know why I cannot get the [img] bb codes to work here...

It's not bad, really, but I liked it better before.

mougl - 9-12-2010 at 11:54 AM

NABX is out for me this year, but I'm going to try to get to JIBE. Crossing my fingers for nice commission checks and an understanding sales manager when I request 5 days off after being there for only a few months. LOL

rocfighter - 10-12-2010 at 07:13 PM

Very well done web site. Makes me wish I could go. But long time family plans prevent this. Though I think I would need a few friends to help drag the Ratt up those stairs!!

acampbell - 11-12-2010 at 11:09 AM

Yeah the 96 lb Ivanpah was a real *itch on those stairs, but the new handicap ramp 700' to the south of the stairs makes things easier. There are still 4 steps up to the deck with the ramp and there are a few yards of sugar sand at the beach end of the ramp but still doable.

Camping on Jekyll Island is also a good way to save pennies. The campground is at the north end. It's huge and pretty quiet on the weekdays.

Yes but book early and book often as snowbird traffic can fill it up. There is no other camping permitted on the island, nor overnight parking in any parking lot without a permit from the campground.

stevep - 13-12-2010 at 04:08 PM

im actually going to be there this time finances are starting to turn around for me its been a long wait three years things have been real tight also angus email me i have abanner pkg im not useing any more and your willing to have it the hq one you used a few years back

acampbell - 28-1-2011 at 11:30 AM

Got all the green lights I need from JIA (Jekyll Island Authority) and we have their full support.

I have also updated the schedule. Many of you know that this part of Georgia is a coastal community with maritime traditions and one annual tradition in the spring is the "Blessing of the Fleet" to wish the fisherman safety and prosperity.

Well this year at JIBE we will start out at 1PM Wednesday with a very brief invocation, or our own "Blessing of the Fleet" by local Presbyterian Pastor Dawn Mayes, to wish us good luck, good weather, good winds, and safety. She is very excited about this and I know it will be a nice touch. My plan is to have folks present to start setting up around noon or whenever to get lines laid out and staked and then right ofter the invocation, do a mass launch and explode the sky with ripstop. Should be real cool and I will try to get press there. JIA might be able to help with that.

If anyone has gear for tandem rigs for VIP demo rides, it would be great if you could bring it along.

Tide will still be up there at 1pm but at that point going out quickly and the beach will not be crowded as many will recall.

pbc - 28-1-2011 at 11:46 AM

Angus,

I'll bring both of my buggies and I should be able to make it there by noon. This will just be more incentive to rebuild my hitch for my new lead buggy. :-)

Philip

ripsessionkites - 28-1-2011 at 12:34 PM

how do i plan this event work with my schedule ...

a. ask for more vacation time

bobalooie57 - 28-1-2011 at 12:43 PM

tobytobsen - 28-2-2011 at 07:07 AM

We are flying into JAX on 5/19 at 5pm. We are going to attend my sister in laws graduation up in Kentucky on the sunday. So i am not sure yet if we leave on Friday or saturday by car. If we leave on Sat i will come by on Friday!

Oh, and we are staying until 5/31.

acampbell - 28-2-2011 at 10:05 AM

Sorry for the delay, but Registration is now up and open with links in the JIBE page Here

The link on the JIBE page will take you to secure purchase of registration on the CWS site, where you can use credit cards.

I have a JIBE Guide PDF that you can download. It has directions, maps, checklist, schedule, registration and waiver forms for faxing.

cheezycheese - 28-2-2011 at 01:41 PM

Do non flyers also have to register...? I did not read th whole thread. Sorry if this info is already stated...

acampbell - 1-3-2011 at 05:44 AM

No Marc, spectators and non riding friends and family members are welcome and do not need to register. Registration covers insurance and direct costs and the beach is otherwise public state park. Extra lunch tickets for Thursday, t-shirts and Sea Turtle Center tour tickets are available. We usually have an equal number or more of friends and family over riders and that just makes the event more festive. Locals will put up big show kite / SLS-P-A-M-L-I-N-K-s and that will be seen by people driving on to the island, drawing more spectators. It's a great scene.

van - 1-3-2011 at 06:53 AM

Angus,

Looks like a great event. Everything planned out and very family oriented. Pricing structure is also good, especially for non participants. This is the type of event I like to go to. Keep up the good work.

shehatesmyhobbies - 1-3-2011 at 10:16 AM

Marking the dates on the calendar! Will register by weeks end!

acampbell - 1-3-2011 at 04:21 PM

Van: Thanks for the kind words. come out and bring that custom buggy. We have TX represented by Taper123 but that is a big state and could use more! We have the room for sure.

Rich: Can't wait to meet the gang from your neck of the woods. Seeing Todd without a helmet on is worth the price of admission alone.

shehatesmyhobbies - 1-3-2011 at 06:56 PM

Angus the thrill is going to be all ours! Look forward to meeting you guys as well!

acampbell - 2-3-2011 at 12:10 PM

It came to my attention that the links for registration purchase were not on the JIBE page as advertised. This has been fixed.

Also the JIBE_Guide.pdf has been updated with corrections and amplifications (see links on my 2/28 post above.)

tridude - 2-3-2011 at 05:26 PM

BeamerBob - 10-3-2011 at 11:38 PM

Take tridude up on his offer if you've been thinking about giving the water a go. I'm sure I still couldn't do it if not for all his explanations and help right there in the water. He won't just tell you what you want to hear, but he can get you there if you can listen and put into action what he's saying.

Drewculous - 14-3-2011 at 08:57 PM

Well, even if I can't be there, at least my old buggy can go back home to Jekyll. Glad you put this together Drew.

acampbell - 15-3-2011 at 11:08 AM

Yes that buggy will be able to navigate itself on JI beach!
Great News Drew!

acampbell - 15-3-2011 at 02:56 PM

Both you guys bring a lot of sunscreen for the dome. You have to wear a helmet anyway while on any kind of wheels, but if you wear a bike helmet with vents, the burn marks are pretty funny.

I will say that even the Jekyll Island Authority is getting stoked and has JIBE on their web site on the events calendar.

Thats awesome! Its great that you have built such a good relationship with those folks Angus. Too often we hear about the negative, liablilty issues, local ordninances, etc.

tridude - 15-3-2011 at 03:31 PM

JI is a special place for sure......................whats the status of the shops and gas station?

acampbell - 15-3-2011 at 04:10 PM

Shops and post office are relocated a mile north to a temporary center using commercial trailers- sounds odd but really is pretty nice.

The Twentieth Century Fox movie set for X-Men is nearly gone and they will leave it better than before.

The new gas station and Flash Foods convenience store with Dairy Queen Express is open on the old station site and is very nice. All eco-friendly with LED lighting inside (OK, it's a little dark), and really nice landscaping and picnic space outside.

Gas prices are higher than mainland by about 4-5 cents- not as bad as before.

The old convention center and shopping center are completely gone and footings and castings for the new center and village are going up. everything about the project is eco-friendly and they even transplanted massive 100+ year old Live Oaks. The root balls they cut out were over 60' wide wrapped in burlap and I do not know how they lifted them.

Return visitors will be stunned when they see what is going on.

More about the reconstruction here...
http://www.jekyllisland.com/Revitalization.aspx

If you can't tell, I am extremely proud of what is going on on Jekyll Island and can't wait to share with new visitors.

shehatesmyhobbies - 15-3-2011 at 05:01 PM

Dang, I need to get registered soon! Maybe later tonight, busy, busy, busy! Can't wait to see and meet you guys!

frankiter - 16-3-2011 at 09:51 AM

Registered, waivered, and stoked!

acampbell - 16-3-2011 at 08:55 PM

That is great Frank, thanks

Yeah I know that many are distracted by NABX, but I would like to get registrations in soon so I know what to plan for. No need to pay now if that is a trouble- you can click "Will call" or "check-money order" on the site and pay me when you get here.

Click here to go to the general JIBE site that has links to secure purchase of registration

Click here to go direct to registration purchase.

Click here to download the JIBE Guide PDF with faxable registration form, waiver, maps, checklists and useful info

It also is helpful to me to be able to tell the Jekyll Island Authority how many are coming and from where, and this will also help with press coverage. Right now we have Maine, Texas, Missouri, Nebraska, New York and Maryland confirmed and booked in addition to the local regional knuckleheads in the SE USA

Still waiting to hear on California and Canada.

The stoke is building strong. Thanks everybody!!

pbc - 16-3-2011 at 09:20 PM

One additional knucklehead registered.

I am sooooo looking forward to this.

just took a glance at JIs forecast this week on IKitesurf and the afternoon onshores have begun.............................almost like turning on a 2pm light switch.....................:lol:

acampbell - 18-4-2011 at 10:11 AM

Uh huh, and with the new moon and a perigeean spring tide, there is a 9+ foot tidal range, yielding a huge beach at low tide and putting the water in the dunes and almost to the causeway road at high tide.

During JIBE, the tide will be low late in the afternoon, starting at 4 pm on Wednesday. It will also be a new moon with 8+ tidal range. This later low tide favors the afternoon sea breeze which has started to develop consistently in the last week.

Use the links at the top of the page to get to registration or download the JIBE Guide PDF with maps, checklists, faxable registration and waiver.

Edit: Also recreated links here...

For those wishing to save a few bucks off the Jekyll Island hotels, there is everything you need at I-95's exit 29. I have added a new map and directory of the area here. It is just 11 miles from Jekyll.

The JIBE page is Here

Go direct to the purchase page here . Credit cards can be used securely.

I have a JIBE Guide PDF (click to open or right click to save) that you can download. It has directions, maps, checklist, schedule, registration and waiver forms for faxing. Faxing is toll-free and no cover page needed.

If you just want to download the Waiver and fax it to me (800 number is on the form) prior to the event then you have more time to buggy.

Please pre-register so that I know what to plan for. If you want to pay at the event, you can register on the CWS web site and mark select "Pay by Check/ Money Order"

acampbell - 18-4-2011 at 10:29 AM

One more reminder to all JIBE newbies. Blackbeards Seafood Restaurant, long known as the landmark to find JIBE, has been renamed "Fins on the Beach". My maps and the web page have been updated.

JIBE veterans will have to learn to navigate the construction detour to get to Kite Beach and JIBE. The stretch of Beachview drive you are used to using in front of the convention center is GONE, pending reconstruction of the new convention and shopping centers.

To get to the restaurant parking lot, you have to double back through the historic district as if you were going to the Turtle Center, then take a right on Shell drive which brings you out in front of the new Great Dunes Park, just south of the restaurant.

How many in that number, you recon, Phil?

This is useful information for me. Knowing where people stay will help me promote the event with locals like the Jekyll Island Authority and Chamber of Commerce, etc. . May also help me negotiate discounts for an "anchor hotel" for the future.

BeamerBob - 19-4-2011 at 07:36 AM

You'll definitely get me, Dean, and Nathaniel, though Nathaniel is moving to finer digs on the island on the weekend when two additional friends/family of his show up.

My campsite might get as many as 3 more from Gainesville, but they are tentative.

Just got back from the T-shirt Shop. Chris/ PokiteTrash will be especially pleased with this years' design, I think. Heh Heh

Oh, and then there are the "Shipwreck Run" shirts available to those (for a modest cost) to those that come back to camp with one of the pennant flags that will be planted at the shipwreck site on the southern tip of the island. Phillip will recognize some of the imagery.

Chad, glad to hear you made it Jekyll to see the new park and new environs. More to come. Sorry to miss you but I was inflicting random acts of customer service to unsuspecting shoppers at the local Lowes. Sux to drive to work and see the smoke stacks at the Georgia Pacific plant indicating a strong on-shore breeze that I have to miss. Yeah, Blackbeards is re-named "Fins on the Beach". I changed all the JIBE Website references and maps but it is still bound to cause confusion to the newbies.
