The snow's coming!

macboy - 24-10-2010 at 11:09 PM

Just got back from walking the dog and had to shake the snow off her (and my coat).

WAHOO!!!!

Doubt it'll be anything worthwhile - and doubt it'll stick around but there's nothing like feeling it hit your bald head to get you in the mood for some snowkiting!

flash - 25-10-2010 at 05:16 AM

high country in colorado is already white!!! WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE the season is almost here!! :wee:

ripsessionkites - 25-10-2010 at 05:38 AM

Let's ride!!!

canuck - 25-10-2010 at 04:43 PM

This time of year us soooo frustrating. Enough snow on the grass and great wind this morning for my first snowkite session but I could not get out of work. Now it has all melted again:dunno:

More on the way tonight :singing: Have to go now to practice my cough ..

Bladerunner - 25-10-2010 at 05:53 PM

I'm supposed to head home to Calgary for Christmas.

Is there anyplace kind of 50/50 to meet up with the Edmonton and Calgary crew for a day together ?

Sylvan lake??

macboy - 25-10-2010 at 07:28 PM

Sylvan would certainly be a good halfway spot! And if it's a N/NW/W wind I bet launching in and around Sylvan proper (the town) would be perfect.

Cheddarhead - 26-10-2010 at 02:37 PM

Send some of that white stuff my way, it's really not that far.

mac,
if the meet 1/2 way idea pans out I'll split gas/ride with ya!

Bladerunner - 26-10-2010 at 07:29 PM

At the moment it looks like my most available days are Dec. 22, 23 , 24, 26 and maybe 27.

It would be great if we can put this together. Sylvan isn't much more of a drive than Spray Lakes would be. I would go North instead in a heart beat to ride with PKF Family !

Sylvan sounds good. I like " park and ride " kiting ! Park the car and RIDE !

Any of those days work for you Canuck, Mac, Rev, Kiteboy ... ?

:bigok:

macboy - 26-10-2010 at 08:41 PM

Yup - any day works when opportunity like this is knocking! And RevP - you have yourself a deal there. I'll buy the gas, you buy lunch.

macboy - 26-10-2010 at 08:45 PM

(Oh, and don't worry Cheddarhead....our snow won't last much past tomorrow or the next day. But it'll be back! I'll send you some of the "stay around a while" kind )

make sure you swing by and grab some extra kites if you can before you head on over there. please and thank you.

Bladerunner - 27-10-2010 at 06:38 AM

WooPwOOP !

PL presents for Alberta PKF riders ! YOU BET I can pick them up ! :cool2:

Maybe I can bring a 16m Vapor Demo just to Skunk Proof the day ?

canuck - 27-10-2010 at 09:10 PM

I will be in for any of those days. There are lots of places to go around Red Deer. It will be great to get together again. NABX Canadian style:wee:

shaggs2riches - 30-10-2010 at 05:34 AM

Makes me wish that we weren't going to B.C. for the holidays otherwise I'd be in for sure. Really gonna make an effort to meet up with some of you this year. If anything I have it planned to go to the Edmonton kite fest in Feb. Hopefully there is wind this time like there was last time. Sometimes life sux having to to be responsible and all:embarrased:

PrairieWind - 30-10-2010 at 08:12 AM

Looks like they are riding in Montana... this was posted on the Montana Kite Sports site - taken Oct 28th.
www.vimeo.com/16306594

shaggs2riches - 30-10-2010 at 10:26 AM

Rode by the local field to get coffee this morning and thought to myself "is there enough snow???" I probably could ride it but more than likely I'd ruin the surface of my board and since it's the only one I have. :(

macboy - 30-10-2010 at 10:59 PM

Shaggs - you ski? If so, go grab a set of ski skates. So cheap they are almost disposable - perfect for those "not enough snow" days.

Or is it "skate skis"........

Or rip it up on the landboard - you could probably powerslide to Alberta on a skiff of snow

shaggs2riches - 31-10-2010 at 07:24 AM

You just reminded me that I have a stashed pair or Sled Dogs Snow Skates that were around sometime in the 90's. I used them for one season and were good on hard packed. I should still have them in a box in the basement. Why didn't I think of this before:crazy:

lives2fly - 1-11-2010 at 04:47 AM

Oh man i'm so desperate to get out on the snowboard! It will be another month at least until we get any worthwhile snow in the UK and then we dont have enough altitude to make it reliable!

Got 11 days off at Christmas so wishing hard for snow!

Then I have 3 weeks in France and Switzerland to look forward to in February. woo hoo :)

kiteboyza - 1-11-2010 at 06:25 AM

I would be up for this and being a snow kiting virgin would appreciate all the help I can get

WooPwOOp!

Nothing like the added excitement of somebody cutting their 1st runs ! :wee:

With your background you will be up and riding in no time !

kiteboyza - 1-11-2010 at 06:53 AM

Without a doubt ! It is by far best to have they kite you are most comfortable with. So much easier putting it all together when you are already on top of your kite.

macboy - 1-11-2010 at 06:00 PM

I marked it on the calendar today when I flipped away from October - jump to December, make the note and then settle back to November ; )

I the wife asks I told her November 1st

Anywho - the best odds look to be 22/23/27 for me. MAYBE for the 26th.

Bladerunner - 2-11-2010 at 06:41 AM

22 , 23 are best for me. Drive home the 26th or 27th.

Planting a seed....
BR if your driving would you have room to take the SuperTruck off my hands?
$1100CAD
I know Prairiewind wanted dibs so I'll get a hold of him. Otherwise...if anyone there is interested.

kiteboyza - 5-12-2010 at 08:59 PM

wassup with this trip, I'm pretty flexible on dates?

macboy - 5-12-2010 at 09:54 PM

It's on - scheduled for the 22nd unless wind looks better on the 23rd. We'll meet at Sylvan Lake....the Big Moo probably? I think that's the best landmark.

If the wind's not cooperating we're doing the drive on the 22nd anyway - even just to grab a burger and visit a while.

revpaul - 6-12-2010 at 10:22 AM

i'm out (dang it) sorry.
not too bad off though I'll be in sunny Florida.
maccy-b...i told BR if you guys think you might need my two big FSers I could send them out with you.

kiteboyza - 6-12-2010 at 04:19 PM

been out at Sylvan today with the wife on some business....looks sweet but not a breath of wind

Bladerunner - 6-12-2010 at 05:52 PM

Page 2 glitch?

Bladerunner - 6-12-2010 at 05:55 PM

We got out to Mamete and Tunkwa lakes this weekend. Not a lot of wind but you could go anywhere on a big kite.

I'm there with you Kelly ! Even if we coffee kite :smug:

Next Stop ...... Sylvan Lake! :wee:

macboy - 6-12-2010 at 05:59 PM

Thanks for the generosity Paul! Could be the session savers.

Kiting in Florida by chance? If ou're thinking about it let me know - I have a few contacts from my researching and digging - mostly Miami based but one in Tampa and St Petersburg.

revpaul - 6-12-2010 at 07:09 PM

i'm going to travel as light as possible. just going to bring clothes, kid and minimal photo gear. i'd love to rent some blokart action if i could while down there.
we'll be in Sarasota but a couple hour drive here or there is normally not a problem.
if you want the kites we'll meet up before i leave. aren't you heading to Florida some time this winter?
BTW-i got a "possible Carbon Monoxide" emergency call the other day and I recognized the name of the caller (landowner) as he owns/farms one of the nicest flattest pieces of land I've seen yet (alfalfa and/or hay). it's 1 mile long (east/west) and .5 miles deep (N/S). no trees/treelines to the north for at least .25 miles. i've been eyeballing this property for 2 years. Derek plays hockey with the guy's brother so I asked Derek a long time ago to inquire about using the field but he never did.
anyhoo I stayed/chatted quite a while (locked his hot water heater off too) and got his permission to ski/buggy/landsail. he said his brother has a nice piece of land (wide open too) even closer to town. about 2-3 miles west and a couple miles south of town. sounds interesting. might be a real decent spring (as long as it's dry).

macboy - 7-12-2010 at 12:58 AM

:eekdrull:

kiteboyza - 7-12-2010 at 07:46 AM

anybody know where I can find a flagpole for a sail banner, normally just pushes into itself and about 15-20ft long? Used to buy them at every tacky beach shop in the UK for £5

revpaul - 7-12-2010 at 09:57 AM

??
it might be quicker and/or cheaper to have a local welder fix something up for you.

bobalooie57 - 7-12-2010 at 10:23 AM

I'm pretty sure that Don at powerkiteplace.com can get them. Or you could rig one with 3/4" sch 40 PVC!

PrairieWind - 7-12-2010 at 10:53 AM

Might not be 5 quid,... but a guy in Edmonton sells these www.horizonkites.com/windsock-pole-p-110.html?osCsid=a10a845...

sorry about the long url...

kiteboyza - 7-12-2010 at 11:19 AM

telescopic fishing pole is the correct name, guys use them for lake fishing, they have no eyes
something like this

http://cgi.ebay.ca/3-5M-8-Sections-Telescopic-Freshwater-Fis...

macboy - 8-12-2010 at 01:34 AM

My neighbour has a mast he uses for his shortwave stuff - looks to be fibreglass. I'll dig about and see if I can recall what/where it came from.

The one on eBay isn't the one?

macboy - 8-12-2010 at 01:42 AM

Um.........

Portable.....pole

Probably not what you're looking for given this post was in the Snowkiting thread, not the General Chit Chat

kiteboyza - 8-12-2010 at 07:24 AM

will have to buy the one on Ebay, it's the one I need

Bladerunner - 8-12-2010 at 07:46 AM

If you ALL are covered for ultra low wind I just got a 10.8 Reactor so am personally covered.

I planned to bring an 11.2 Vapor before my Reactor arraived. I can still bring it on request but space is becoming an issue.

Do any of you want / need me to bring the Vapor?

markite - 8-12-2010 at 07:47 AM

Hey Kelly
Do you have any major fishing suppliers in Edmonton? There are a couple of large suppliers around Toronto - one is a long established family business and the others like Bass pro will stock some sizes of telescopic poles (look for Crappy poles) or maybe Vince at Horizon will have some available? There are a few places to get them online but it's the shipping that runs up the cost with the length for mailing. Common sizes are around 10', 13', 17', 20'.
A few different construction qualities and as a rough price figure just over 1.00 per ft.
Did a quick search and one option was the Fishin' Hole - look under poles - telescopic - wonderpole (13' and 20') - might only be an online availability but there is a street address.

bobalooie57 - 8-12-2010 at 07:51 AM

I've been using a 13' pan-fish pole, by Shakespeare, bought at Wal-mart for 8.99. It can hold a medium Peter Lynn windsock, as long as it is anchored well, in 20-25mph wind. At the beach, I use the coil shaped rod holder, also a wally world item@1.99, for the snow, I just jam it into the snow-bank.:spin:
EDIT: The pole collapses into itself, to about 5-6 feet, has one loop at the tip for attaching your line.(or windsock in this case) I would think this might work for you if your banner isn't too long.

forgot about Wallyworld, will have a look this morning and let you know if I can find one

as for kites

I'll bring everything I got here

kiteboyza - 8-12-2010 at 11:26 AM

nothing in my local, if one of you guys do see one grab it for me please and run it to Sylvan, I will cross your palm with some cash

thanks
D

macboy - 8-12-2010 at 02:54 PM

I'll check the Walmarts here and The Fishin' Hole is just up the road from me (and next door to my bank). Next time I make a deposit I'll pop in there and see. Their website is not so functional from a search standpoint. I'll let you know what I come up with.

BR - We'll watch for the wind forecasts to see what we need but if we need Paul's FSers and I can hook up with him in time we'll be well covered. You can save some room in your pack list so Rip can fill it up with PL freebies ; )

kiteboyza - 8-12-2010 at 02:56 PM

thanks

macboy - 8-12-2010 at 03:31 PM

Markite found it.

Wonder Poles

Let me know if you want me to grab one for you. I called and they are in stock.

kiteboyza - 8-12-2010 at 03:38 PM

yes please, the longer one would do nicely,

thanks
D

macboy - 8-12-2010 at 05:19 PM

Consider it done. We'll see you in Sylvan!

kiteboyza - 8-12-2010 at 05:59 PM

ripsessionkites - 11-12-2010 at 06:07 AM

Working on your freebies but all I have is Med and XL stuff. Beanies are in the USA so they make it in time.

Stickers are possible too, put a few on kiteboyza skis for me. Hehehe

kiteboyza - 11-12-2010 at 05:54 PM

XL is good for me....stickers, yep I can spread the love!

are you on skis or snowboard? race kites seem to work better on skis since you can step back to keep pressure on.

i use my race kites on snowboard but it was a small learning curve until i applied the same principals when i kitesurf and also shorted my stance width. also i lengthen my Power Line Leader by 1 inch so it wouldnt rush to the edge as quickly.

Bladerunner - 16-12-2010 at 05:47 PM

If I am correct Kiteboyza plans to go the depower on handles route !
Go with what you know has always been my moto !
It's interesting how Flysurfer used to talk about flying on handles in their manuals but it never took off ?
I think it makes good sense and look forward to giving it a shot!
C'yall on the 22nd :wee:

kiteboyza - 19-12-2010 at 07:56 AM

they were de power, then I chopped the bridles, a bar feels wrong! They now fly on handles...lol

macboy - 19-12-2010 at 09:25 PM

Kamikuza - 20-12-2010 at 06:01 PM

Oh shut up  too cold to surf, not cold enough to snow, not enough wind to landboard ...
