beaches in MA

I was wondering were some good beaches are to kite in MA when I go to the cape with any kite I cant fly it until after five I'm basically asking were some cruddy beaches in MA are that are never crowded

if you find it......let me know. but if the beach is cruddy then its mostly cluttered with shells that will destroy a kite. I was on the highway today, and only 1 out of 10 cars I counted really quick was from Ma. People come in bus loads heading to the cape. But its like that anywhere on the coasts in the summer months. Try a Park. thats what i do, and as long as i head up early I am fine.:smilegrin:

No such place exists. Your in the northeast where population density and limited coastline mean any beach will always be packed.

In the winter most beaches are usable without any problem. During the summer you'll need to find a park or soccer field that works. I usually go to the Pope John Paul park in Dorchester, MA. The grass is kind of bumpy so let your tires down to 8psi in your buggy. Sometimes they forget to mow the lawn too so you can lose your buggy if you forget where you put it:smilegrin:. Even in the park though you will find days when there's 50-100 kids running around with walmart kites making buggying impossible. I'm sure none of this is what you wanted to hear but sadly we need to give the right of way to the general public.

Think about coming down to the October Wildwood Buggy bash. Lots of fun and lots of beach.

Make friends with a farmer, sod or otherwise.... otherwise pray for cold weather that sends beach/picnic goers packin'

I love the Fall when CSP and Brenton Point are ghost towns. :thumbup:

Indigo, I always wanted to try CSP it's pretty close to me. Where in the park is a good spot? I always wondered is there a spot for any wind direction?

The field north and west of the quad formed by the tree line is where I am used to going, but should probably explore some of the others.

Just below the arc of parking spaces at the North end there is a flag pole.... just kind of nice as a visual cue for the wind.

Middle of the field can be prone to flooding after heavy rains.

There is a section that has a huge rock bed just underneath the grass... not a really problem, but someplace where you probably don't want to nose plant a kite under power.

Rob (thief) says there is another smaller field that he flies when this one is crowded, but I need to pry the location out from him. ;)

West edge of the field has some picnic tables if you want to put up a cooler in the shade.

Porta-potties are around until the rangers are bundled up for the colder months.

Dell's Frozen Lemonage truck makes the rounds in the warmer months.

Downtown Bristol has its share of good restaurants and ice cream stands.

On the way out of town, the Johnson Roadside Farm Market serves up fresh home made pies. :rolleyes: :thumbup:

Thanks indigo!!! I am aware of the yummy pies from Johnson's yumm Rasberry apple pies hmmm...I will have to check out CSP then. it's only 20 min from me. I think I will wait though until after labor day... I do have my yearly family reunion party there every year in August and never even think about grabbin the kites. so crowded. :tumble: Thanks!!

whats the popular beach in MA for kite boarding basically the cape during the winter k. and if i want to do some kite flying bractice with a non bladder kite i live in peeing distance of a cranberry bog so im good


Ive heard that for different areas their is a specific kite that is the favorite for one area like the cape what brand of kite boarding kite would be best for MA or the cape

there isnt a specific kite for any area. it's what the rider likes and wants from the kite. Maybe what you heard is depending on what your doing with the kite there is a specific kite?? like water, A SLE, LEI, arc etc?? and Snowboarding or on land with buggy or ATB an open cell or arc?? hope this helps......

ya from what ive learned so far open cell is for land and bladders are for water because the bladder helps to restart the kite in water and the land kites have no bladder because the bladders of the kites are very delicate.

well I want a kite that I can do body dragging with and practicing on land thats why I thought this lesson would be good http://www.kitecod.com/lessons its basicl kite skills and it comes with a bladder less 2m that would give me a little pull in the winds.

Click the "learn more..." link on the first lesson... it looks like they give you the chance to upgrade that to an HQ Hydra (a closed-cell foil) that can be relaunched from the water and should allow you to do basic body drags or practice kite control skills on land. But that takes the 1 hour lesson from $175 to $315. It doesn't sound like you get to get your feet wet with the one hour lesson, regardless of the kite you opt for.

Go West, my man, go West. To the shore of Lake Ontario, I know, several hours drive for you, but check the Albany, ny locals thread in the Meet-up section of the forum. It might be the only uncrowded sand beach in the NE, and though I've been skunked with the buggy my past couple of visits there, the sideshore wind from the south would have been great for water kiting, if I had that skill or equipment. If you were to visit for a camping trip (it's a State Park, so out of state camper fee's apply) after doing the Hydra lesson, you could probably practice body drags to your hearts content here, and the only other kite you might see would be one of mine (on shore) or a stunter or single line. I've never had a problem with the Parks people, I just walk far enough to the South from the LifeGuarded beach as to not be a bother to anyone, hasn't yet been more than 1/2 mile, more often a couple hundred yards will do. I always seem to get a good response from the other beach goers, so it has been good in that respect too. I did see a couple of kite boarders here late last Oct., in wetsuits with a 25mph onshore wind and their 12M LEI's, they were constantly getting blown ashore! Mine was the first buggy they had ever seen, and neither had ever flown a fixed bridle foil, so I let one of them fly my 2M Beamer in the 25mph wind, and he was surprised by the pull it generated. And nor should you. All of the classes I have seen don't hit the water until lesson 2 or usually 3.

1 = kite control, the wind window, landing, launching, etc.
2 = body dragging
3 = kite boarding.

In this immediate gratification culture we live in all want to learn to run before they can walk but if you don't have the basics mastered, you shouldn't be out on the water.

One can not overemphasize the fundementals and basic safety principles too much.

There is a lot of water kiting in Dennis and some good kiting in Welfleet too. If your intent is to get on the water you are best served taking lessons with the locals and then getting out on their demo gear so you can figure out what you like on their kites before you buy something that is too big, too small or too scary. It will cost you more up front but save you a lot in the long run.

My family has a cottage in Eastham but I don't usually bring my kites with me. If that is convenient for you let me know and we can possibly hook up when I am down again this summer.

Just to be clear, I wasn't insinuating that I thought you should get your feet wet in lesson 1. The description on the web page, just leaves it for one to intuit.... which may always be a good thing.

By NE, I really didn't think you would be up to a drive to Nebraska, I meant the North East. Southwick Beach is on the shore of L. Ontario, in upstate New York. Probably 6 hrs drive at most, but for an uncrowded beach with good beginner conditions I thought it might be worth the trip.

I don't know about the cape, but Nahant was very good to me. Two days of good useable winds and minimal crowds... The guys who ride this beach are privy to one of kitings best kept secrets. That place rocks!!!

I'm on the cape this week thinking I could landboard for the first time. It was amazing wind here in wellfleet today i went out this afternoon and it was a steady 12-13mph flying an 8m access. My problem is I can never find the right sand! I waited until low tide and tried riding on the most compact surface but the wheels just sank right in. does anyone know of a beach on the cape where you can landboard?!?!

as far as the runway goes google 'Floyd Bennett Field'. it's in Brooklyn, i guess you could pitstop on the way to/from wildwood. when Jaymz and I went we were told fall and spring is really honkin out there. they require a $50 yearly pass to ride there, but we just kinda set-up and did our thing as we weren't there very long. this location seems to be very popular amongst the blo-kart scene.

Glad you had a good time Cheezy. We are lucky to have ocean on both sides of the beach. If you come back try to plan it after september or before may. As soon as school is out and summer is here there isn't much room on the beach but the rest of the year is great.

I'll take a look at the airfield. I think as soon as my back is OK I'll be down there. Maybe in 4-6 weeks. Maybe we can get together then.

YEA! A get together at Floyd Bennett Field would be great. Althou I cringe thinking about an OBE on FBF's old rough pavement, not quite as forgiving as a nice sandy beach. Might have to bring the leathers along :smilegrin:
Would be cool to all tent camp at one of the camping areas there and we could kayak/canoe if we get skunked.

That sounds great Jaymz:thumbup:. I like the camping idea. How bumpy is the pavement? Are high speed runs doable or will I be dodging giant potholes at 60mph:shocked2:. I'll definately bring full body armor:smilegrin:. Do you know how I go about getting the annual pass that allows you to ride on the runways?

we had a 10 at nahant sunday 7/11/2010. dan came late but was riding wicked fast on the 4m jojo i was jumping on my 6m jojo with my comp 6 getting good hight .dave c. and jens were in heaven. rick g. was so glad he came and ben made it to.awsome

IM glad my post got post jacked by people from Mass I was wondering what kites sizes work best I thought it was mostly light wind but now im not sure I was thinking of getting a an hq like a neon or a peter lynn kite like the charger because they make kites that can be used in alto of different areas
