OOBE Field Thunder Run?

pokitetrash - 15-6-2010 at 09:47 AM

OK, in the winter we had the OOBE Field Chili Run- (we ate chili) now, how about after we ate the chili, we have the "Thunder Run" this summer?

Actually, the name implies the fact that we could wind up dodging short, late afternoon thunderstorms but that's when we get our wind this time of year--about 2 - 6pm.

After reading Phree's account of getting zapped by the bar and tingling feet, I'm thinkin' the more the merrier. (this way MY odds of getting hit will go down...)

Pool, Cooler full of beer, hot dogs on the grill are all about 15 minutes away after we get fully cooked.

At the polo field, "OOBE Field", Aiken SC.

Throwing this date out:

July 24 & or 25?

pokitetrash - 9-7-2010 at 05:31 PM

Folks, sorry to say duty calls and I have to travel for work unexpectedly on the weekend of the Thunder Run, July 24 & 25th. DAAAAAAMMMMMNNNN!!!!

Don't let me not being there stop anyone from coming if you're an Aiken Kite Club member or meeting one there. So far everyone who said they would come is a member, so as long as one is there (land use agreement) anyone is still welcome . I plan on having a Fall meet up there anyway so if your're not interested in burning up in July, fall is great winds at OOBE.

I got lucky about 12 years ago and struck a deal with the owner of the unused dairy farm. He let me start a R/C plane club for $1000 year rent. We've been flying there ever since and the property has been sold 3 times since with each owner happy that someone was there to care for the property and prevent illegal dumping. I approached the current owner with some pictures and an explanation of what Kite Buggying is and instead of a turning me down he asked if I could jump in the air with them and I said "Well... yea... but I wouldn't do anything like that on your property..." and he said "Why Not?"... And the rest is history. He does require a signed waiver from anyone flying therte and from "Aiken Kite Club" for his protection.

Bladerunner - 11-7-2010 at 08:32 AM

What is "Aiken Kite Club" ?

Aiken Kite Club is the very loose organization I put together so we have a governing body, as loose as it is, to provide the landowner peace of mind that we will be responsible for all kiters using OOBE Field. Anyone can join, its free, just need to fill out the waiver form which I give to folks who want to fly at OOBE. A new member needs to meet with a "club" member out there for the first visit to be shown around and how and where to fly without interacting with off limit areas , horse riders, etc.

Hardrock - 21-7-2010 at 11:03 PM

OK,,, trying to get some idea's for the weekend.

Wondering if anybody is going to the OOBE field and what days?

Hardrock - 22-7-2010 at 11:32 PM

HELLOOOO,

Looks like record temps with no wind. But if anybody is going to show, let me know.

tridude - 23-7-2010 at 06:29 AM

Hardrock - 23-7-2010 at 09:05 PM

Tridude had the right plan.
