This beach is only accessible by 4X4!!! On a typical NW wind day this beach is perpendicular to the wind direction and is great for speed runs etc...
BIG FOOTS REQUIRED! Beach has been washing away for years but now that the South Jetty has been fixed, the beach is coming back. Looks a lot different
now.
Sunday, June 13th, 2010 Winds were gusty 15-25, 5M kite, hit 45-55MPH. If you have never been 45MPH, on a reach, in the soft sand it is AWESOME!
Great beach to try out those bigfoot tires and push yourself with lots of run out.
You can also get out there by parking in Area C (small rectangle to the south) and hoofin it.flexiblade - 14-6-2010 at 09:37 PM
I am guessing that Oregon has banned buggying on the rest of the beaches available? There is the beach just south west of there that looks amazing
and is 15 miles long. A little bit North the beach runs 23 miles. Are these just overpopulated with locals, tourists? Have they posted a no fly
rule? If so that really sucks - looks to be amazing stretches that go on nearly forever. It's a shame when we're forced to scrounge a 1 mile bit of
beach that is hidden and hard to get to when there are 38 miles of shoreline a stones throw away. Not knocking your find - always good to have a
place that doesn't get too many footprints, but just a bummer to be turned away by the rest.WIllardTheGrey - 14-6-2010 at 10:24 PM

Nope, I highly doubt it, Nope.:wee:
What makes that beach so great is the orientation, in a north wind you can go east-west for a good long dune ride.
I'm guessing that like me they get predominantly N-NNW with the rare dreamy west wind thrown in just to tease.flexiblade - 14-6-2010 at 10:33 PM
gotcha - how often are the northerlies coming through compared to the westerlies? 50/50 N to W? 80/20 N to W? Just curious.WIllardTheGrey - 14-6-2010 at 11:04 PM
6/94 - W / not so nice
I just checked the past two weeks on the Florence jetty meter, which mind you have been good weeks.
Out of 336 hours we had
13hours east 4%
20hours west 6%
76hours south 22%
77hours skunked 23%
150hours north 45%
Is this the norm for the local area or for the Oregon coast as whole?bison - 15-6-2010 at 09:50 AM

The prevailing wind is NW!!! This can be really fun on the beach you mention (Sunset Beach) 'flexiblade' but after 10+ years & 1000's of hours,
using this beach, a change is nice. A NW wind on that beach (South Jetty) is onshore and 5-10MPH, maybe more, over what blowin on Sunset beach. The
mouth of the Columbia seems to channel the wind but it is a bit more gusty.
The beach I was pointing out has always been around but in the last 5 years has steadily washed away due to damage to the south jetty. Now that the
jetty has been repaired the beach is coming back. This is the first time I have been to that particular beach in a while.
In fact there are so many places to buggy around here WITH LITTLE TO NO RESTRICTIONS it really is BUGGY HEAVEN!!! For example: I live a half block
from the beach in North Seaside. The estuary has changed so much that the river has moved north. This has left a huge chuck of sand that is now a
perfect reach on a NW wind. Just don't go past 12 street and nobody cares.
Unlike Cali, ALL beaches in Oregon are PUBLIC!!! No one owns them. The Oregon Beach Bill (House Bill 1601, 1967) took care of that.
When the parks dept wanted to close beaches for the Snowy Plover, we fought back!!! Their public meeting went from 20 people to hundreds. They tried
to sneak it in under the wire. The locals said "NOT SO FAST" They did get to close some of the southern beaches, but failed to close others once the
news broke in the local papers on the North coast.
If you haven't been here, come to SOBB. Although, this is the best time of the year for wind. Started late this year due to lots of rain.flexiblade - 15-6-2010 at 08:22 PM
I am definitely coming up for SOBB - posted earlier because after google earthing the surrounding area I was amazed at how much good straight runable
beaches there are in the vicinity of the site you posted about. Can't wait to get up there - tuning up the mark V especially for this - the new
nickname (Lay-Z-boy was the old model) is the "Sherman".bison - 16-6-2010 at 08:34 AM

Are there pictures of this "tank" ;-)flexiblade - 16-6-2010 at 10:36 PM
Not as of yet - some of the mods need finalizing and a final painting. I just get tired of being in the shop for what seems like forever when doing
these things. Pictures will be posted on the original thread for the Mark V when I am done.arkay - 17-6-2010 at 10:31 PM
You can buggy here, but really you might as well go to sunset. It's a pretty place but the beach isn't really any better than the 9 mile run south
and you only have just about 1m of usable beach. Plus the ride from lot D isn't fun. This area, ok well slightly east, is however a fantastic spot
in the water when the winds are from the east.
