DON'T SHIP YOUR GEAR TO THE HOTEL

fredagie - 18-3-2010 at 09:26 AM

We just talked to the folks in charge at the hotel, they are asking us not to ship to the hotel.
If you need to ship gear? check with Kent @ wind of change and see if he has room to receive your gear.
if you have problems let me know and I will work something out for you.

Yes bugie mekanik is comin! I bring air mashine and tools, I will help those in need, but only part time.

I was going to pack a bicycle pump but if you will have a compressor, I could handle a tire change from there. I mounted one of my slicks on a spare wheel and didn't have much trouble at all. More soap would've made it even easier.

I'm thinking the same thing about shipping to the hotel. First, I got a Terrible's reservations clerk who cast doubts on the idea, saying "the hotel will need to find a secure place that's big enough, and then someone will need to be available who knows where it was put, when you get there..." etc.

So I had him transfer me to Buffalo Bill's front desk, and got someone who acted like it wasn't an unusual request, and was unconcerned that there would be any difficulty. It was the "unconcerned" part that worried me a little.

There is a FeDEx office at the airport. I Used then to ship home one year. Funny part was that they guy there had never shipped FedEx Ground before, but everything went well. UPS store will charge full retail markup on shipping. If you use one of these solutions check their hours especially if you arrive or depart on a weekend. sometimes just limited hours on Saturday.

Angus, I couldn't seem to get the FedEx website to do a "hold at FedEx office" for me without paying for FedEx Express shipping (i.e. no Ground) at $120/box. Do you see a way to do that?

Hey Sailors,
I am leaving for Elmer's on Friday, 26 March.
I have room in the back of my shop to receive and hold gear, but it must be gathered up before I leave, or you'll be pissed off.

Huh. I am going to FedEx a little later today and will ask about the policy. I used them to ship home FROM the depot at the airport. Maybe ship inbound TO a UPS Store or one of the shops and do it from a UPS customer counter at a UPS depot where I think the rates are better than a store.

Just got back from the local FedEx depot. They told me that they will NOT accept a Ground package to be held for pick-up. I had known that unlike UPS, their air and ground services are separate networks and they explained that this is why they will not hold Ground packages, since they will have no end-to-end delivery tracking to the final recipient.

I know that when I drop off my FedEx Ground shipments there at FedEx (Air) it is kind of like dropping off at a UPS store franchise; it just gets on a truck to get to the Ground depot an hour west in my case. I just never really knew that they were THAT dis-integrated. Doesn't seem efficient.

Thanks, Angus, for getting to the bottom of that. I actually had the same problem at UPS.com; they talk about offering hold-at-office on the site, but when you actually go to set up the shipment, that doesn't show up as an option. As far as I could tell. Maybe I'll stop by my friendly UPS counter on the way home and ask them about that. The UPS offices in Vegas don't seem to be open very late on Tuesdays, though, so it probably won't do me much good anyway.

depending on how much stuff it is and if you trust a stranger (I will give you all of my contact info, mothers maiden name, first child, and uhm... license plate... or.. uhm... my kite!) I am driving from Colorado to the site on wed night and will be there the butt crack of dawn Thursday. If you plan on showing up on Thursday then this can work out. :) It might cost you a little less to ship to Colorado anyways, and I drive a minivan that right now will be pretty light with only my kites, firewood, and my happy face.

You can ship your gear to us here at A Wind Of Change, just let us know what is coming and mark on the boxes who it is to be held for. We have more than enough room to hold your gear and you can pick it up anytime Monday - Friday till 6:00 pm at night. we are closed on the weekends and we will be at the playa but someone will be there at the office up until Friday if you need.
