Alvord dry lake is in Oregon; in late spring and just before fall is the time we go. Fields is the closest town (16 miles) with the best hamburgers and shakes we have ever tasted, and not just because we were eating our own cooking. They do have 7 or 8 motel rooms, gas station, grocery store/everything else store, and a cafe. Camping on the dessert is the best and a hot springs is close by for bathing.

Oh, I didn't realize it was the same place. I looked into going there when I was visiting Bend but it seemed to be a six hour drive and couldn't ask my family to go so I could fly kites. I would like to try it sometime though

Alvord is in Oregon west of Burns 118 miles. Black Rock is a burn't butt thing in Nevada.

LOL!!! Jellis said "butt"

Burning Man is what I was referring to, as a lot of folks go naked, thus burnt butts.

I buggied Black Rock at Burning Man (not naked...yet). It was awesome for me as it was my first time on a dry lake, I've done everything on San Francisco's OB so far. The playa was hard-packed this year which made for some great speed. It was also surprisingly forgiving during wipe-outs. It seems to crumble on impact a little. Last year I brought out the kiteboard but it was just too duney (not enough rain in the preceding months). If you go to the event they ask that you leave through the airport and buggy in the open playa.

Gurlach is the closest town and it is seriously dinky. They have one inn that's part of Bruno's Country Club (bar/grill/motel).

I hear it's frosty cold this time of year, by the way.
