Deep Freeze Continues

shaggs2riches - 12-12-2009 at 08:05 AM

So I woke up this morning hoping that it may have warmed up enough to go flying today, but ain't gonna happen. I think that the deep freeze that has been plaguing the Canadian Prairies has brought us our coldest day yet. At 6:30am the weather network said this
Currently -35C (-31F)
* Feels Like: -49C (-56F)
* Wind: W 19km/h (12mph)
* Relative Humidity: 67%
* Pressure: 102.43 kPa (1,024.30 mb)

Looks like it will be the same for tomorrow also. Guess this just means that I get to do my Christmas shopping that I so have been avoiding. Burrrrrrrr!!!!!!

Haha. I don't envy those temperatures. Its been cold here, but nowhere near that cold. High is supposed to be 35F so if the wind is right, I might attempt breaking out the kites.

And RAIN in the forecast for next Friday?!

WTF........? Oh the joys of being Canadian eh? :lol:

Yikes -35? I'm complaining about it being 26F right now. Its a heat wave compared to that :embarrased:

Man...I don't know how you guys do it...that's scary cold...seems like in that type of cold, the kite would just freeze!

...Mad props to anyone that goes out to fly in that kind of weather :thumbup:

When it's not raining, snowing or freezing, then there is only ice, mud or slush to ride on.

I'm looking toward returning to the Treasure Island Kite Fest in Florida next month. Hard packed sand and generally kite buggy/kite surf friendly.

-44 here this morning but weather don't stop me. Have some x-mas stuff to do with the wife this morning and if no wind then going ice fishing...lol.

:eekdrull: We hit -3 and TONS of people had their pipes freeze!! That would have sucked to not be able to take a hot shower in the morning O.O. Do you guys have any issues with pipes freezing? It warmed up to 17degrees F here in idaho, much more doable IMO :)

You're hardcore man :D

We heat tape and insulate all our water lines, yet some still freeze up. I grew up in the North you learn how to dress for the weather or you'd be house bound for the winter. This time is our best winds, good solid speed so you take advantage of it or miss out.

WOW in New England people ar whining about low 20's!!

markite - 12-12-2009 at 09:41 PM

The best thing to do to check if you think your pipes will freeze is to touch your tongue to it first :P

Past 2 weekends it was blowing 50-70kph and snowing but not enough stuck around to kite on. This weekend it is -30C with lots of snow and no wind :thumbdown::thumbdown:. I feel a bad case of H2N2 flu coming on at the end of the week when it warms up, the sun is shining, and the Chinook is blowing.

I hate to say it but I've been out twice in this weather.
According to the wife and some weather station we are the coldest spot on the earth at this moment. We are sitting at -51 with 15 km winds, so yes its cold.
It got up to -34 with descent winds and fresh snow, so. O k, I admit it I am an kite addict.
I was eating up 12-14 mph gusts in cruise...sweet. The lift when your pushing the top end can give you height real fast and re direct with the Scorpions turning ability is very beneficial. I can do stuff I only dreamed of before like my recent milestone of a nicely landed 1080 on ski's. I would guess I probably hit the 80 foot mark and about 15 to 17 feet high.I would definitely say to anyone that 25 mph on a Scorpions on land is pushing it but I'm a big guy which helps and body gear..lol.

The warmer air is on the way,... with wind of course! I'm on daddy duty today - so I've checked in periodically to watch the temperatures and wind climb on the Alberta weather cameras.

www.ama.ab.ca/road_report/camera/camera_station_main.htm?lin...

It's currently 25 degrees warmer 130 km west of me... it's blowing this way. Should be a great end of the week with wind and warmer weather. The cold was good to get the ice set nicely for the season.

Here's to a more "reasonable" winter from now on!

Saturday is looking good here to, will be heading out for sure.
