I find it interesting that the global warming debate was never really a debate. Any time there was any serious discussion about facts, they were largely ignored by the masses saying "The debate is over".

The debate must've only taken place before "An Inconvenient Truth" because since then, it seems like any sensible position in opposition of global warming is shot right down and brick-walled.

If people only took time to read the facts and discover for themselves that 150 years of human industrial prevalence would not even dent the climate of the world a significant portion, they would realize how bogus this "global warming" thing is.

The ocean is the largest absorber of carbon. Carbon gets trapped at the bottom of the ocean in immense amounts and stays because of the pressure. If that pressure were to be released, all that carbon is released. This is a much more dangerous situation than any human civilization can create.

Science can be pretty convenient when its only looking at what you want. Since when has science become religion? Isn't science supposed to be unbiased, only seeking fact from empirical data? I understand the need for theory, but you certainly cannot pass theory for fact and impose restrictions on people based on that.

All that said, it is important for us to be aware of how we affect the earth, but let's not get out of hand here, folks. Carbon credits, strict mandates and ridiculous restrictions are a pretty big threat to the overall health of not only the US economy, but largely the world's economy.

My two cents.. I'd love to hear your opinion as long as it's not trying to start some flames.

I used to be a supported of the whole global warming thing. Now I still think that we have a huge impact on the environment, but all the weather patterns have been around long long before the industrial advancement. So I think that a lot of the hype that has been put on global warming is just a scare tactic to get people to spend money on energy efficient cars and appliances. I agree with the conservation of minerals and water. I will also agree that the added carbon from oil/gas plants and vehicles etc. are not doing anything to help the situation. I however believe that other natural events around the world such as volcanoes and earthquakes, do just as much to hurt our ecosystem. Look at the Caribou runs in Northern Canada. Over the hundreds of years one specific path taken has been covered by caribou droppings. Now that stuff is starting to melt all that frozen crap mountain is thawing out releasing a toxic methane. Just something I learned in school but isn't that a point that the natural events do just as much harm at one point or another. Still I find that people need to be a little more concerned about how they can reduce their carbon footprint. Like I said mixed feelings.:dunno:

Anyone seen the Penn & Teller episode where they ask Al about his power usage? Apparently his mansion sucks down more power in a month that most families do in 15 months IIRC - what a hypocrite. And all the anti-GE / organic crop fools ... :no: NZ is full of them which is another reason I like Japan :D

I think we should do as much as we can to improve the environment, protect it for future generations of humans and all other species.
Take smog for example - it IS a problem is cities and clean air is a good thing ... so lets make clean vehicles and sell them at a good price, with a SENSIBLE infrastructure to back them up.

Well, remember to keep things compartmentalized: There's reality, the science and not everyone agrees on the facts. There's how it's presented--the cause of the latest uproar. There's how you feel about the reality. And then there's what you do about the reality.

Though I disagree with you on the reality--i believe humans have a powerful effect on the environment--I think the presentation is pretty bad because people have been letting how they feel about the debate interfere with openness and objectivity. That kind of crap is bad for science and bad for science PR.

I also agree with you that how people have responded to (their belief in) climate change is just crazy. People embrace new technologies as environmental saviors forgetting that some of the most effective for tools for "saving" the environment are very old. The problem is the old is not sexy. Things our great grandparents did couldn't possibly be smart because they didn't understand our modern world, right? Uh, no, that would be wrong.

There are some newer technologies that are useful, cost effective ways to conserve energy and reduce waste, but many of them aren't particular new or exotic. So you don't hear much about insulation or reflective roof materials but you sure hear about photovoltaic solar panels that still cost way more than the former even with all the local, state, and federal subsidies. You don't hear people talk about driving less, car pooling, or walking or riding a bike to work instead your need to get rid of your old car that works and buy a hybrid that gets only twice the fuel economy.

So funny story about eco-friendly marketing: I was a meeting 2 months back where lunch was served and they had those "compostable" plastic cups. The debate was what do you do with a compostable cup? Put it in the trash? the recycle bin? There is no "compostables" bin at work. I have a compost pile at home, so I threw it in my back pack and took it home. The next week I found some compostable packing materials and brought those home too. They've all been in pile since and look no worse for wear. If I hadn't lanced the cup with the pitch fork I'm sure it would still hold water. This is of course what I expected all along. I sure as hell didn't buy the stupid eco cups but the person ordering disposable cups in the office was certainly swayed by the green image. What a load of B.S.

Recycle aluminum cans = yes
Recycle PET bottles = maybe (I forget now)
Recycle milk cartons, paper etc = no! requires more resources to make them useful again - and of course more polluting industrial processes! Forests are a renewable resource :rollyeyes:

The thing is people do the retarded green thing cos it makes them feel good. Even though it's completely the opposite effect!

Hybrids ... less useful than a regular car, use as much gas and what do you do with the nasty battery when it fails? True electric would rock - have you seen the torque curve of an electric motor? Check out the Killacycle FFS holy pooh what a machine.

BUT ... how do you supply all the demand for the additional electricity? :lol: more nuclear reactors NO cry the brainwashed masses more coal fired stations NO cry the brainwashed masses.

The thing I do not understand is why the focus on temperature. Any idiot with a modicum of thermodynamic knowledge knows you would need to be looking enthalpy not temperature. After all temperature can even go down but the enthalpy is still rising.
I guess it is what you get when people with no physics background engaging in scientific debate.
