locations in Oregon?

ripsessionkites - 4-11-2009 at 11:14 AM

have some free time coming in Dec. / Jan.

looking for snowkite locations in OR.

arkay - 4-11-2009 at 12:41 PM

I've been trying to track this down too :) Not much luck; here's what I can remember from my looking late last winter. Snow has been off my mind all summer, but I've got to pick my sarch back up :)

I actually don't know of any 100% confirmed sites anymore since the area in Bend is still off-limits, from last year which I believe is still a no-go.

I've heard that Mt Hood Meadows may allow kites (and downhill bikes) but I have yet to confirm.

Aparently there's a few areas around the north side of Mt St Helens where people kite.

There's a dry lake area in north eastern oregon that I hear is good, but can't recall the name. I think a few folks from here headed out there last year.

Then there's Idaho which is close :)

I am looking for places in washington and will share what I find. There is a dry lake called alvord but it is a long drive. I think about 6 hours from Bend. I would bet there is someplace close to Bend a person could go.

I was at crater lake this summer and north of the rim looked like a great place to kite. There was even several feet of snow in June up there. I don't know if they allow anybody to go off the roads up there though. It is a national park but I suppose if you called they could tell you for sure.

archkiter - 5-11-2009 at 02:06 PM

let me know if you find somewhere. I've been wanting to try snowkiting for a while.... I wish that this sport had been around when I lived in Montana.

ripsessionkites - 15-11-2009 at 02:22 AM

Never been here myself, but worth a look.
Rip when you thinking about heading down this way?

I may just have to make a road trip, and check this out.

I keep wondering about the lava flows off highway 242 in the Deschutes national forest. It is due north from 3 sisters.

I wish I knew. I heard from bigkid that when powerzone goes snowkiting he goes to Montana. I am desperate to find a place local though. I have found some places that might be ok but I think I would need a snowmobile to access most of them. We are getting a fair amount of snow and several of the ski resorts have opened in the cascades.

@CSA_D ... im coming hopefully for the xmas weekend. Xmas at Monty's (RRR) is the plan right now. im never concrete with work (airline industry). if its slow I will go however i have overseas plans too. wonder if i could split myself in half, work would benefit too, and probably give me yet another bonus.
keep you posted. maybe try and get all the WA / OR together in for xmas dinner. we do one here locally so it would be cool to meet other kiters in a non-kiting eviroment. who knows, but Eggnog and Vodka is good.

@stetson, you find the place Ive got the access to snowmobiles x2. ill pay for the gas to ride in.
locally in BC our mountains are open now too. early by a few weeks. well, its either snowkiting or snowboarding + lift tickets.

LET IT SNOW!!! Got Location? Will Travel. :wee:

KB888 and BR - ROAD TRIP!!!

USA_Eli_A - 15-11-2009 at 06:21 PM

nah, if you want to snowkite go to Idaho, Oregon offers only expert level snowkiting..

it's dangerous to snowkite Oregon without some experience, get in touch with Kite Soldier in N. Idaho and take another few hour drive to some very fun kiting

Bladerunner - 16-11-2009 at 07:32 AM

Sorry Rip',

Palm Springs for Christmas. Next vacation is NABX. Gerald and I will be checking out that lake North of Merrit a.s.a.p. . Good for a long day or a cheap overnight on a Saturday night in Merrit ?

After 2 years spending my vacation money on -26 and windy in Montana, the Playa looks Sooooo much better.

Coolbreeze - 16-11-2009 at 12:38 PM

What about Park city Utah? Huge kite skiing venue.

ripsessionkites - 16-11-2009 at 09:06 PM

The eastern slope of the cascades in Wa can deliver. Out on the waterville plateau. Just north of Wenatchee.

Have you been there? I would like to go but I need a way to find out if there is snow yet. I am guessing not yet. I was in Spokane over thanksgiving and there was only snow in the mountains.

Loop - 6-12-2009 at 02:06 PM

Ya i live just east of Spokane and there still isnt much down low. So I suspect there isnt much on the waterville plateau yet, gotta be soon tho. And no I havent been there kiting before, just passed thru on a roadtrip in the summer. But it does appear to be good in the winter. I just cant justify the 3 or more hour drive, when I could be in Mt playgrounds in the same amount of time.
