Ozone 2010 Snow Kites

These are up on Ozone's website. Looks like they've revamped their lineup again for 2010. Maybe this is the year that I'll finally get to try a Manta.

Wow! They look good, although IMHO I think the different graphics made each design more unique. I kinda liked the old Access XC and Manta II. Now they all look like last years Frenzies and Flows, just with different color schemes. On the other hadn, a Blue Access would look amazing. Just my $.02.

Wow, it looks like they made some major changes to the Access. They've added the 3-line bar, brake trim straps and the easy reach safety reload features from last years Frenzy/Manta bar. What I can't figure out is why they've deleted the clam cleat trim strap!

I'm guessing that the brake trim straps are supposed to take care of the trim, but I don't really understand it since they were supposed to be for "fine tuning".

Also a minor detail but they list a "large technical backpack" but from the picture it looks like a straight up stuff sack.

Looks like they've gone to double pulleys on the Access as well. I still haven't tried any of their double pulley kites.

PB, what do you think about Frenzy vs. Manta for gusty winds? I've flown an 11m Frenzy FX, but never flown a Manta.

My quiver right now is

4m, 6m, 8m, Access XC's
11m Frenzy FX

but I'm selling off the FX this year and looking to replace the low end of my quiver. I'd really like to give a 10m Manta a try. At 150 lb what do you think? Low end would obviously be more of a concern since I can always put up an Access. Though I should note that I share those with my significant other as well.

My personal thoughts... I'd keep you Frenzy, better for gusts , less tip tuck and twists more mid aspect, hard to out grow... unless you want to race or glide of mountains or get a 15 Manta since it the largest.. but then you can go with a larger Fysurfer...
I'm getting another 11m Frenzy this year..

Maybe replace the 8m access for a 9m Frenzy for freestyle or bigger jumps and more power....

Even on the 08 11m was fun jumping on flat snow hundreds of jumps a day out of it...

Yeah, may just do that one day... I wanted Snowkiting to feel
more like Kiteboarding... and saves the knees too... I skied first
and learned how to snowboard with a kite and didn't like the
feel of regular snowboard setup...

Well thanks for the input. Maybe I should stick with my Frenzy or at least stick with the Frenzy lineup. What do you think about the FYX vs. the FX. Worth the upgrade?

The other thing that I've been wondering is if I could get more performance out of a 9m because it would turn quicker so that I could fly it more actively in light winds and work it for more power.

I can't get rid of the 8m Access though. That's my girlfriends light wind kite. Plus I love it too much (orange/grey/white color scheme).

Once they put the 4 pulleys on the 09 Frenzy it made quite a difference, smoother and faster turning... I like to loop allot...

A bit of a myth working a kite... = a bigger kite overall.. Many say that of a speed 15m to a 19m... Sure you get more power by moving it but it can get annoying I find... in the end it just being underpowered or less power.. but can be fun for a while or for trying new tricks... or for some that just feel comfortable with a little less power. It's also harder to jump underpowered. Saving the signing for Lulls is better I find... If you get bored always working a kite or elbows give out, put up some more power for more park and ride... Selling my 09 7m like new and a 9m New 09. Sweet Kites...Ozone Raised the Bar on 09's. But moving to 2010's.

Yeah I like colors too... I try to get customers the color they want... Let me know... I like my Kites different colors to each size...

I heard one guy had a brevet on something like it 4 years ago but never got to market (is the market there ??)

Not sure anyone will try to make it a product.

so anyone willing to share some info (a good idea) may be I can get to engineer something for my own use.

It looks like they only added the mesh intakes to the Access and their new Pure model (which looks is basically just a 4m Imp as far as I can see). Now why would they add it to their entry level kites and leave it off on the Manta and Frenzy?

Or am I just not seeing the mesh or screen on the Frenzy/Manta models?

my input is that the manta vs Frenzy is simple. They are both good in gusts but the frenzy maybe a bit better....they are foils you know. The access is all around the shanizzle...meaning awesome...less bar pressure from the dual pulley's on each side, tri line bridle is simpler and faster to trouble shoot if ever nessesary etc etc.

simple explanation:

Manta 3 = Super smooth and fast kite with lift. Very fast turning compared to the Manta 2's
Frenzy 2010= same as last year but felt a bit faster around the esge of the window in hard turns and faster in the air kitelooping.

Both the Manta and Frenzy have a great new deal with un hooked riding and with a little trim on the clam cleat, you are in serious power and ready to pass the bar and or throw down powered railey's...Megatron loop is EASY to hook back in and DOES NOT come off when locked on...unless you pull the relesase which with gloves on can be reloaded super fast and easy!

All around the 2010 Ozone kites are better, because they are tuned to be faster yet more forgiving, and the bar and bridle system is SO tuned! we must all buy Rob a beer for the R and D he put into this stuff!

Eli had this kite out at SOBB 09. Amazing kite. Fast and responsive from the looks of it. Didn't personally fly this one, but just an amazing kite. This kite looks at home equally on the water or on land.

Besides I love the color scheme of this kite.

MEGATRON!!!!! LOOPS????!!!!

OK...I dont know yet but with a dynometer on the way i am going to be running an experiment on all spreader bars, harnesses, chicken loops, etc etc to find their breaking strength (true capabilities) both from STATIC and DYNAMIC pulls. My thoughts shall be conclusive AFTER these tests.. which will hope full y be done by the end of the winter season.
In the mean time, I have NOT had a problem with the Megatron Chicken loop however after taking one apart I cant believe that it is not "one piece" meaning that there seems to be vulnerability in that the chicken loop is connected to the center trim line (which runs to the center AB and part C lines on the bridle config...) the actual connection is simply a set of two inline over hand knots that jam on a metal washer that deflects and distributes load onto the plastic top of the Megatron chicken loop itself.... In comparison to the Older checken loops that were inline Dyneema and Nylon (from Beal) girth hitched together and hel with a releasable pin.....in which I taped shut and made permenently locked for the 15 Manta II that I got from Rob Whittal...

SO really!! they are working...I have not heard or seen one break, however with my engineering experience, it does look like there may be need to back it up on HUGE (above 50 foot) jumps to be sure that if you are kitelooping....there is NO WAY the cord could shear through the metal washer and then the plastic...
MATHMATICS IN MIND:
Looking at the true loads...me....being about 150 pounds, the KN (use dAn if you want but it is more confusing to me) of me depends on the wind and the kite size but roughly, I am as a falling person in the sky however, about, 3/4 a KN of about 165lbs until i hit something like a trampoline...haha. (1 kn being about 223.87 pounds of moving force) and the speed of a kite in KITELOOP,...... well, I have to figure roughly that the kite, the bridles as well as the flying lines will act as load limiters and absorb some force, then add in my movement "with the kite" (even in the air) I guess that most of the time the true forces on the kite simply from jumping (not kitelooping) are about a bit more than my KN weight of appox 165 lbs in motion.....so figure that the lines on my kites are tested each to about 550 pounds, the bar and the chicken loop who knows their strength? but they havent broken and have not shown signs of wear from a year of a lot of riding!!


SO I think they are fine!
But in the air, when above 50-100 feet I am glad that I back mine up...hehe haha.

But that being said, I teach climbing (as well as snowkiting for a living SOO I am conservative after taking more than 4 100 foot plus falls in lead)

I should add that the center line also connects to and through the LEASH CLIP IN which that ITSELF is bolted to the body of the chicken loop via a threaded 1.2mm? hex bolt that itself is threaded and bolts together, aka a two piece bolt....
So it seems that there is more to the thing than JUST the knots...and that is nice, but I am still backing it up for my OWN mind sake

Going out kiting now.....and then TUES AND WED are looking good....camping out in MAine for some epic stuff if anyone is around....I ll be a triangle!
