Charleston, SC...a good spot for a getaway???

clintopher - 18-8-2009 at 03:49 AM

My anniversary is coming up in early October and the wife and I want to do a little something. We just found out she's pregnant and figured it'd be the last chance we'll get for a while. I'd like to keep it coastal and to the south of the Outer Banks yet not a terribly long drive. The only thing that really comes to mind is Charleston and Myrtle Beach. For some reason Myrtle Beach just isn't talking to me.

A few of you guys live in or around there don't you? Would you folks mind answering a couple of questions?

Any recommendations for accomodations?

What should I put on my itinerary if we decide to go? Any theaters, museums, boat rides, or other cool stuff I shouldn't miss?

What about restaurants?

Also, what do the locals do?

Of course, all things are subject to change if the wind picks up. Speaking of that, where are good places to fly, specifically, kiteboard?

Congratulations on both! There are a lot of people down there and I'm sure they will chime in with the info.

Kitesurfing... OBX is the place to be. I have never been there, but I hear its a great spot to ride on the water... :)

charleston for sure

Francis Marion hotel on King and Calhoun. good down town spot .

or Charleston Place on Market and Meeting.... ground zero

Mill house on Meeting

these are all very close DOWNTOWN couple blocks from each other .

B&B too many to mention.

KIte on sullivan Island station #28-29

thats the hot spot, crowded kite scene

FOLLY a bit further south 20min or so and just crowded

tides! these will make a difference . low tide will yeild a better start without too much crowd. generally late afternoon rides are best

Thanks for the info. Is the kiting scene just as crowded in October??? And what do you mean by crowded? I've been to places where five kites got a little dicey and others where 30 kites had all the room in the world.

PHREERIDER - 18-8-2009 at 07:46 AM

in october, if not under a hurricane which can be fun with east wind coming in, the winds come from the north , NE and can last for a week like 15 -25mph.

crowded for me is more than 3 people, one on the left and one on the right and myself.

could be two folks or 2 dozen heavier on the weekend. in general the beach is empty that time of year. i have riden a north wind on the north end of folly .

plenty of room though super big space at low tide. heavy current at breech's inlet so mind the tides
